A Chinese national wanted by the authorities in Tanzania and China in connection with a murder case was on Monday arrested in Likoni, Mombasa County.

The suspect, 44-year-old Zheng Lingyao, was arrested by officers from Shelly Beach Police Station after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend in the Senti Kumi area. Security officials in Mombasa have confirmed that Zheng is wanted in Tanzania in connection with a fatal shooting that took place in Dar es Salaam in 2022.

He is also wanted by Chinese authorities and international agencies that are reportedly involved in tracking his movements.

Police sources said the suspect will be detained at the Shimo La Tewa prison while the authorities verify documents relating to the murder investigation and coordinate with the relevant agencies on the next steps. Investigations are ongoing, and officers have indicated that Zheng will be arraigned in court.

In 2022, Police in Dar es Salaam launched a search for Lingyao, who is accused of killing Fu Nannan, 26, a fellow countryman.

The incident occurred on Saturday, June 11, at 11:45pm, in Kalenga Street, Ilala, according to the statement issued by the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Jumanne Muliro.

On the day of the incident, it is alleged that Lingyao went to Ilala where the deceased was living on the third floor at one of the area’s residential buildings, where he is said to have shot him to death.

“He (Lingyao) shot a woman identified as Nie Mnqin in her stomach before taking Nannan’s life,” the statement read.

Mnqin was rushed to Muhimbili National Hospital and a preliminary investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from a love triangle and misunderstanding.

"Further investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing and we are searching for the suspect for legal action to take course,” Muliro said in a statement.

The authorities have indicated that they have been attempting to arrest the suspect since the incident occurred, with the support of regional and international collaboration.

Police have stated that they will release additional information as the investigation progresses and consultations with foreign law enforcement agencies conclude.
