The national elections of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) will go ahead as planned after the High Court declined to stop the poll slated for April 18, 2026 at the Kasarani Gymnasium, Nairobi.

However, the Employment and Labour Relations Court barred Nakuru Kuppet branch delegates from participating in the union's national election. It follows a petition filed by member David Rono, who claims there were irregularities during branch elections held in Nakuru on February 7, 2026.

Secretary-General Akello Misori, Chairman Omboko Milemba, the Teachers Service Commission, Registrar of Trade Unions, the Kuppet Nakuru branch executive secretary and Nakuru County Labour officer have been named as respondents in the case.

Justice James Rika of the Nakuru ELRC issued the orders barring the branch officials from taking part in the poll until the matter is heard and determined.

"The ex-parte application was granted orders staying any further actions, arising out of the elections held by Kuppet Nakuru branch. Such actions include the participation of delegates elected from Kuppet Nakuru branch," the court directed.

The court further stated: "The court does not think it is necessary to bar Kuppet from convening on April 18 as sought in the ex-parte application dated March 16, 2026."

The court also declined to hear the case under a Certificate of Urgency as requested by Mr Rono.

Ex-MPs declare interest

Campaigns for Kuppet elections as well as the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) national election have gained momentum with candidates for the various vacant seats engaging delegates for support.

Kuppet recently changed its constitution to allow officials to hold office up to 65 years, from 60, while branch officials must resign their positions before contesting the national ones.

Knut will hold its Special Delegates Conference at Tom Mboya Labour College, Kisumu on April 3, 2026.

Former Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui and former ODM nominated MP Wilson Sossion have declared interest for the secretary-general positions in Kuppet and Knut respectively.

Mr Collins Oyuu, the current Knut boss, has ruled out the possibility of Mr Sossion running, saying that he is not a member of the union and therefore does not qualify. He succeeded Mr Sossion in June 22, 2021 after the latter resigned.
