TSC suspends Alliance Girls teacher accused of sexual abuse
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi on June 21, 2025.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sent on compulsory leave a teacher at Alliance Girls High School who has been accused of sexually abusing learners, pending investigations.
The 30-day suspension takes effect from July 15 2025. In the suspension issued by the commission, Mr Peter Albert Ayirois alleged to have breached multiple provisions of the Teachers Service Commission Act and the Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT), by allegedly engaging in what the TSC termed as professional misconduct.
The allegations of sexual abuse at the school recently sparked national outrage, and last week, some former students and parents staged a demonstration at the school. They were first published by African Uncencored.
“It has been alleged that you have breached Clause (a) of the Third Schedule to the Teachers Service Commission Act, Regulation 141 of the Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT) and Clause 22 of the Code of Conduct and Ethics in that on various dates while stationed at Alliance Girls High School as a teacher, you engaged in acts and omissions that amount to professional misconduct,” reads the letter.
The teacher is accused of engaging in immoral behaviour involving learners at the school.
“Due to the gravity of these allegations and the need to conduct independent and impartial investigations into the matter, and pursuant to the provisions of Regulation 136 of the CORT, the Commission has decided to send you on Compulsory Leave for 30 days with effect from July 15 2025,” reads the letter.
However, the commission said it will inform the teacher of the outcome once investigations are complete and assured that the matter will be handled in accordance with due process as outlined in existing regulations.
During the suspension, the teacher will receive his full salary and allowances. The commission said it will inform him of the outcome of the investigations as soon as they are completed.
The suspension comes days after Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok called for the arrest and prosecution of the teacher accused of grooming students for sexual relationships. However, TSC is a constitutionally independent commission and does not report to the Ministry of Education.
Prof Bitok said the MoE, in consultation with the TSC and other stakeholders of the prestigious school, had resolved to have immediate action taken against the teacher.
“That teacher is going to be punished and interdicted. We have talked to TSC and all other stakeholders to ensure that he is arrested. No teacher has any business pursuing inappropriate relationships with learners. Any breach of trust will be met with swift disciplinary and legal action,” PS Bitok said.
The PS said a crackdown against teachers engaging in amorous relations with students will be extended across the country.
“We are committed to upholding learner safety and dignity in all education institutions … including not just Alliance Girls but every school in this country,” he said.
A group of former students at Alliance Girls High School staged peaceful demonstrations to protest against alleged sexual abuse by a male teacher at the institution. While protesting outside the school's main gate, the alumni demanded immediate action from the TSC to root out sexual predators within the school.
"We are explicitly calling for the interdiction of the teacher in line with TSC disciplinary procedures, followed by a comprehensive and impartial investigation," the alumni stated.
