The former chairperson of the Board of Directors of Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), Leonard Clement Mususa has died, his family said. He was 72.

Mususa was a seasoned accountant and accomplished business leader with extensive expertise in auditing, corporate leadership and strategic advisory services.

"The Mususa family regrets to announce the passing of Mr Leonard Mususa, which occurred on Saturday, May 30, 2026,” the family said in a statement. “Funeral arrangements are ongoing. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be His name.”

With his death, Tanzania has lost one of its most revered figures in the fields of business, finance and corporate governance, where he made contributions over several decades.

Mususa succeeded Zuhura Muro as chairperson of Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), the Nation Media Group’s Tanzanian subsidiary that publishes the MwananchiThe Citizen and Mwanaspoti newspapers.

“Thank you for your leadership, service, and lasting contribution to Mwananchi Communications Limited,” Mwananchi Communication Limited said in a statement. “May you rest peacefully.”

It was with “a profound sense of sadness that we at Nation Media Group (NMG) received the news of Leonard’s passing,” said Joe Muganda, NMG’s chairperson in a statement.

Mususa, Mr Muganda said, was much more than a colleague to NMG. At NMG, the chairperson of the board said, he was a pillar of wisdom and a source of steady guidance.

During his tenure as an Independent non-executive director from 2015 to 2024, his contributions were instrumental in shaping the NMG’s progress. Whether he was leading the audit, risk and compliance committee or chairing the Board of Mwananchi Communications Limited in Tanzania, Leonard served with a rare combination of professional brilliance and personal integrity, Mr Muganda explained.

“We feel privileged to have known him and to have benefited from his immense dedication. His legacy in the corporate world is significant… May his soul rest in eternal peace,” added Mr Muganda.
