Police in Kehancha Sub-county have launched a manhunt for a 37-year-old man accused of raping the wife before defiling his ten-year-old daughter at Getonganya Village in Kuria West Sub-county.

In a bizarre act that has left residents baffled, the man, a matatu driver in Isebania town, is said to have committed the heinous act after an altercation with his wife last weekend.

The woman said the suspect defiled their daughter after she escaped from the house at night following incessant rape by the drunk husband.

Sunday night

She said the man arrived home last Sunday night after she and their two children had slept. He demanded for food before engaging in the ordeal.

“The pain was so severe that I made my way out and went to my mother-in -law’s house where I spent the night,” she told Nation at Kehancha Police Station where she had gone to record a statement.

The woman said the accused then went to their children’s room and called the eldest daughter aged 10 years. He dragged her to his matrimonial bed and defiled her.

Bleeding

“I learnt this the following morning when my younger daughter informed me that her sister was bleeding,” the woman said.

The suspect has since gone into hiding.

Kuria West Sub-county Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo said the suspect could have escaped to neighbouring Tanzania after learning that the matter had been reported to the police, and villagers were baying for his blood.

Mr. Kimaiyo told Nation that the matter was reported at Getonyanga Police Post, but transferred to Kehancha Sub-county police headquarters "due to its sensitivity."

“We have launched a manhunt. There are intelligence reports that the suspect has crossed over to Tanzania, but we will smoke him out," the officer said.

Family level

Mr Kimaiyo expressed concern over rising cases of gender-based violence and child abuse cases in the area, accusing the community of failing to alert the police on time.

"It is worrying that most cases go unreported as families of the victims opt to arbitrate at family level. We are following crucial leads to help us nab the suspect and deliver justice.
