President William Ruto’s ambition to steer Kenya toward first-world status has received backing from visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who expressed confidence that the goal is achievable and that Kenya is on the right trajectory.

Malaysia—one of the renowned Asian Tigers—is often cited by President Ruto as a model for Kenya.

Kenya is currently classified as a lower-middle-income country.

First-world countries are generally defined by a high Human Development Index (HDI), strong democratic institutions, and a high gross domestic product (GDP).

In recent months, President Ruto has devoted significant attention to the agenda of elevating Kenya’s economic and political standing, arguing that the country possesses the resources and human capital needed to join the ranks of global economic leaders.

While Kenyans continue to debate the President’s vision, Malaysia—a country Kenya admires for its rapid development—has expressed strong support and signaled readiness to partner with Kenya along what it calls a “transformational journey.”

Speaking during a joint press briefing at State House, Nairobi, on Monday, Prime Minister Ibrahim said Kenya was making the right policy choices that would shape its progress in the near future.

He singled out affordable housing as one of the fundamental pillars that could help lift Kenya from its developing-country status.

“We have seen under your stewardship the determination to propel not only the economy but the infrastructure, and to ensure that Kenya emerges as a great nation,” Mr Ibrahim said.

He added that he was impressed by President Ruto’s determination and the speed at which Kenya is implementing affordable housing projects.

“I have seen the potential. I have seen the enormous strides made in the housing sector, which is truly commendable. I don’t think many countries—including Malaysia—have moved that fast or that effectively, because you have a passion to provide housing for the people, particularly the poor,” he said.

The Prime Minister said he was convinced that Kenya’s progress under President Ruto will eventually bear fruit.

“What appeals to me is your determination to develop this country. I sincerely believe you have the resolve, the tenacity, and the conviction to make it work.”

President Ruto said the Malaysian leader’s visit signaled Kenya’s readiness to emulate Malaysia’s development path built on discipline, strategic planning and a commitment to excellence.

“This is a proud moment because you bring home many of the things we have discussed as a country—what is possible when the right decisions are made, when we avoid mediocrity and when we remain focused on taking our country forward,” Dr Ruto said.

He added that Kenya’s new national roadmap draws inspiration from Malaysia and other Asian Tigers that transformed their economies through long-term planning and institutional discipline.

To strengthen cooperation, Kenya and Malaysia signed several bilateral instruments across key sectors.

These include  Bilateral Air Services Agreement aimed at boosting connectivity, easing travel and enhancing trade and tourism. The agreement establishes the regulatory framework under which airlines from the two countries will operate international flights.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tourism, intended to promote joint development and cooperation in the sector as well a n MoU between the National Chambers of Commerce of both countries, aimed at promoting trade and investment were signed.

President Ruto also announced that Malaysia will help Kenya deepen its semiconductor technology and manufacturing capacity—an emerging pillar of Kenya’s industrialisation agenda.

“Through a strategic partnership, Malaysia will support Kenya to grow and expand its semiconductor technology and manufacturing capabilities, including at Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri  which is already a leader in this field,” he said.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to removing tariff and non-tariff barriers, expanding Kenyan exports to Malaysia, and strengthening cooperation in digital technology and high-tech manufacturing.
