Police have identified the man killed by President William Ruto’s motorcade on Thursday, March 13, as 75-year-old British citizen Edgar Charles Frederick.
The man was hit by a vehicle in the presidential motorcade near Adams Arcade along Ngong Road in Nairobi as the Head of State carried out the fourth day of his city development tour.
National Police Service Spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home pending investigations.
“Investigations are underway, and the vehicle has been inspected, with necessary action procedurally taken. The driver of the government motor vehicle, attached to the Nairobi Regional Coordinator's office, is out on cash bail awaiting arraignment in court,” Mr Muchiri said.
The victim was reportedly heading to a mosque for prayers when he was hit by speeding vehicles in the presidential motorcade, just minutes before 1 pm.
Traders and taxi drivers operating in the area said he was popular with street families who relied on him for alms, including food and money.
A witness who spoke to Nation.Africa on Thursday said she had been a beneficiary of his generosity just the day before.
"I bought my family lunch and supper thanks to the money I received from him," the woman recounted.
Traders and locals along Ngong Road said they were shocked by the brutal manner in which the foreigner’s life was ended.
Accounts by witnesses who spoke to Nation.Africa indicated that two vehicles, allegedly escorting President Ruto to Kibra for his Nairobi tour, were speeding through traffic when one of them hit the elderly pedestrian.
A second vehicle in the presidential entourage ran over him, killing him on the spot.
