A man who was shot dead Sunday at a rally led by Senator Edwin Sifuna has been identified.

Relatives have come out to say that their kin, Vincent Ayomo, was killed while running work-related errands in Kitengela.

Ayomo was 28-years-old.

Speaking to journalists Monday, his family revealed that Ayomo was headed to get spare parts for work at a garage on Old Namanga Road when he was shot in the face.

The bullet, kin say, hit him below his left eye some minutes to 6pm.

Outside the Nairobi Funeral Home, Khadija Riyami held on to loved ones as she described how her husband was killed.

“They told me that he was crossing the road going for some spare parts and was shot in the process," she said.

Kitengela had been tense that afternoon during a rally linked to allies of Senator Sifuna. The was tear gas, running battles and gunshots as police confronted protesters. According to his family and colleagues, Ayomo was not part of the rally. He had remained at the garage and planned to leave once he was done with work.

“I immediately made calls to family members and friends...we went round mortuaries in Kitengela but did not find him,” Riyami said.

“It is at the last mortuary that we were told to look for him at Nairobi Funeral Home. We came here in the morning and found him. He was shot below his left eye and the bullet exited through the back of his head.”

'Your friend has been shot'

His elder brother, Moses Ayomo, recalled the moment he got the news.

“At around 6:30pm, a phone call woke me. It was from a relative in Nyakach. He asked me if I'd heard what happened. He then told me my brother had been shot dead,” he said.

The news jolted him, but he could not leave his house because gunshots were still ringing in the air.

“The loud gunshots continued past 9 pm, and that is when I was able to leave to follow up on the issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ayomo's colleague Peter Oluoch was battling heavy tear gas fumes when he received a call from his number.

"A stranger told me bluntly: Your friend has been shot, he fell and died on the spot."

True to the stranger's words, Oluoch later found Ayomo's body lying behind a shoe shop in ‪Kitengela.

“All I ask for is justice. The people meant to protect us are the ones who are shooting us.”
