Juja MP Koimburi denies charges of defeating justice

Juja MP Koimburi aided on stairs before plea in fake abduction case

Juja MP George Koimburi has denied two counts of defeating justice and giving false information about his alleged kidnap.

The lawmaker appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Wednesday.

On arrival, the legislator painted a picture of apparent feebleness. He appeared to walk with difficulty, with some aides helping him up the building's stairs and while he sat down in court.

He stands accused of staging his own kidnapping and addressing the media from Karen Hospital, while falsely claiming he had been abducted and tortured.

“I urge this court to release me on bond to allow me to attend a medical appointment at Karen Hospital. I am not a flight risk. I failed to appear earlier due to illness,” Mr Koimburi told the court.

The prosecution, led by State Counsel Victor Owiti and Norah Awiti, did not oppose the bail request.

Granted bail

Mr Ekhubi granted the MP a cash bail of Sh300,000 and directed him to report to the investigating officer for fingerprint processing. The case will be mentioned on August 5 for pre-trial directions.

Mr Koimburi's appearance comes two weeks after his co-accused — Grace Nduta Wairimu (Kanyenya-ini MCA), Peter Kiratu Mbari, David Macharia Gatana and Cyrus Muhia — were charged with the same offence.

The five are accused of staging the MP's abduction on May 25 in Mugutha area, Juja, allegedly to prevent his arrest and arraignment over four land fraud charges.

Mr Kiratu is separately accused of filing a false police report at Mugutha Police Station, alleging that the MP had been kidnapped by masked men after attending church.

Mr Koimburi and Mr Kiratu face an additional count of publishing false information. The MP is accused of holding a YouTube press briefing on June 7 from Karen Hospital claiming he had been abducted and tortured — allegations the prosecution says he knew were false and intended to cause public panic.

The report filed by Constable Nelly Kabuu under OB No 21 of May 25, 2025, was later determined to be fabricated.

The prosecution confirmed that the accused has been cooperative and had earlier been granted Sh300,000 cash bail, which Magistrate Ekhubi maintained. He also directed that each accused person provides three contact people as part of the bail conditions.

The court was informed that investigations were ongoing regarding vehicles that were detained in connection to the case, which are said to have contained cheque books and title deeds.
