President William Ruto’s allies, led by his deputy Kithure Kindiki, on Friday defended the broad-based government, saying it was ensuring development in every part of the country.

Prof Kindiki also stressed that the working relationship between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has now turned Mr Odinga's zones into “broad-based strongholds,” where he said President Ruto now enjoys massive support.

Prof Kindiki said the cooperation between the two leaders was aimed at building the nation without any form of discrimination.

The Deputy President spoke on Friday during an economic empowerment program for women, youth, and people with disabilities at Midika Grounds, Muhoroni Constituency in Kisumu County.

“All of us in the broad-based government led by President William Ruto will ensure every part of the country, including Kisumu and the Nyanza region, benefits from development. There is no room for discrimination anymore,” he said.

While praising Mr Odinga for sacrificing his interests for the good of the nation, he said he will always be respected for his belief in the country’s unity and development.

“Raila has cast aside his interests in favour of a better nation. We respect him for what he has done for our country. He has made sure his own interests don’t supersede the nation’s,” the DP added.

According to him, since the broad-based government came into place, several projects have been realised in the region, including the revival of sugar factories, stalled roads, expansion of electricity connections, initiation of affordable housing programs, construction of fish landing sites, and empowerment of beach management units.

“President Ruto decided that after elections, all Kenyans deserve development because no government is elected to serve a community or a section of the country. It serves all Kenyans equally,” he reiterated.

Presently, he said, the main sugar millers in Nyanza—Muhoroni, Sony, and Chemelil—are being revamped under a public-private partnership geared toward improving their capacity, management, and returns for farmers.

“We want to make sure farmers are paid well and they receive their pay on time. At the end of the year, they will also be eligible to receive bonuses like tea, coffee, and pyrethrum for farmers,” he stated.

The Deputy President announced that 17 modern markets are currently under construction across Kisumu County. He also stated that the construction of the 52km Mamboleo-Miwani-Muhoroni-Chemelil Road has commenced following years of delay due to financial constraints.

Under the affordable housing program, Kisumu has benefited from units at Lumumba Estate as well as hostels for Kisumu National Polytechnic, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga KMTC, and Muhoroni Technical Institute, among many others.

“This is the reason we are saying two terms—two terms to complete the revival of sugar factories, two terms of better healthcare systems, two terms of more affordable houses, roads, and electricity expansion,” Prof Kindiki noted.

Leaders from Kenya Kwanza also urged Nyanza residents to support the broad-based pact.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot said the pact has resulted in a series of developments in the region.

“I want to urge you, people of Nyanza, to continue supporting this model of government. With it, we’ve already seen new roads and many development projects,” he said.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei emphasised the positive impact of leasing the sugar industry.

“The leasing of the sugar industry as part of President Ruto’s reforms will not only uplift farmers but also grow the economy,” Mr Cherargei said.

Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse recounted efforts to remove former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom he accused of pushing tribal narratives.

“President Ruto had a tribalistic deputy president. He said Nyanza people don’t deserve development because they didn’t vote for him. I personally made a motion to impeach him. Every Kenyan deserves equal treatment,” Mr Mutuse said.

Kisumu Senator Prof Tom Ojienda declared that the region is ready to back President Ruto for a second term.

“As a community, we want to support President William Ruto for a second term. His form of government includes all communities in Kenya, and now we can see many projects in Nyanza,” he said.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi denounced divisive politics and said development should be the priority.

“People who want to promote tribalism, even overseas, should not be given a chance to lead this country. Kenya is diverse, but our work as leaders is to promote development,” Mr Wandayi said.

The DP was accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthews Owili, and a host of MPs.
