As Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro struggles to establish a political identity for himself with realignments intensifying ahead of 2027, he could be walking a minefield that is likely to make or break his career.
Mr Nyoro’s fast-rising star shone brightest when he linked up with Dr William Ruto ahead of the 2022 General Election.
He made a name by defying then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was fronting Raila Odinga as his preferred successor in the 2022 vote, with Mr Nyoro throwing his lot behind Dr Ruto.
It marked the start of a flashy political career for Mr Nyoro, whose stature grew due to his proximity to power. He was made chair of the powerful Budget and Appropriations Committee, with President Ruto leaving no doubt that he relied on the young MP to effectively entrench himself in Mt Kenya politics.

However, Mr Nyoro later began showing signs of second thought about his political association with Dr Ruto when the National Dialogue Committee was launched between the government and the opposition, dismissing it as inconsequential.
Mr Nyoro was further disillusioned when President Ruto reached a political truce with Mr Odinga and formed the Broad-Based Government in 2024.
“What further soured my relations with the government was the Rigathi Gachagua impeachment in October 2024, a political project that I had advised against. Then they removed me from the Budget and Appropriations Committee chairmanship while the President kept saying sarcastically that it was a way of mentoring me for political greatness,” Mr Nyoro said.
With those political intrigues now water under the bridge, Mr Nyoro finds himself in a precarious position, having to carefully explore his options and devise a strategy with military precision.
According to Maragua MP Ms Mary wa Maua, the Kiharu MP has a strong mathematical chance of remaining relevant “since he is loved by his people and has projected himself as a workaholic for the public good”.
However, being good and development-conscious has, in some instances, proved insufficient to guarantee political fortune when political tempers flare.

Classic examples of how unpredictable Mt Kenya voters can be evident in how Mr Peter Kenneth flopped in his 2013 presidential bid despite his popularity as Gatanga MP, where he had delivered notable development.
Ms Martha Karua was rejected three times in quick succession— in 2013 when she contested the presidency, in 2017 when she ran for Kirinyaga governor, and in 2022 when she was Mr Odinga’s running mate—despite her earlier reputation as a loyal Mt Kenya defender.
Mr Kenyatta, despite being the region’s kingpin between 2013 and 2022, was punished by the very voters who had elevated him when he endorsed Mr Odinga, contrary to prevailing regional sentiments.
“We have a very unpredictable Mt Kenya region. This is a region that complained that Dr Ruto had picked the wrong running mate in 2022 in the person of Mr Gachagua. Yet the same region voted for Dr Ruto despite Mr Gachagua’s presence on the presidential ticket,” says political analyst Prof Macharia Munene.
“The same voters later appeared unanimous that Mr Gachagua’s deputy presidency was a tragedy and were comfortable loving only President Ruto as head of government.”
This changed when the Gachagua impeachment politics began, and President Ruto perhaps banked on Mt Kenya’s earlier perception of his deputy to justify pushing him out.
“But the same Mt Kenya people opposed the impeachment and, when Mr Gachagua was eventually kicked out of government, they rallied behind him, offered him a platform to rise again, and today he is more popular than he was when he served as Deputy President,” Prof Munene says.

It is against this backdrop that Mr Nyoro is being warned that any wrong move during his political wilderness could prove costly.
For instance, his overzealous supporters have started circulating posters online depicting him as preparing to launch his own political party.
Others are campaigning for him to be picked as a running mate by Jubilee Party presidential candidate Dr Fred Matiang’i.
There are also suggestions that Mr Nyoro might contest the Murang’a governor seat currently held by Irungu Kang’ata.
“This is called sending feelers to test the ground. It suggests Mr Nyoro is frantically searching for a survival line. It is apparent he is unsure where the shifting political ground will leave him. He is on the drawing board, and any outcome, including self-sabotage, could hit him,” says political analyst Mr Festus Wangwe.
Mr Wangwe says that of late, Mr Nyoro has appeared more inclined toward political zero-grazing, concentrating heavily on Kiharu politics, unlike in 2023 and 2024 when he seemed to be angling for national relevance.
He warns that “one of the bare minimum expectations should be to remain in elected office after 2027 to keep his political sting alive”.
“It is for Ndindi Nyoro to decide whether he will gun for the presidency and ensure he does not fail, since that would render him politically dead. It is also an option for him to become a running mate and hope his presidential candidate wins; otherwise, he risks being finished. Other options include contesting the Senate or gubernatorial seat in either Nairobi or Murang’a— and in all calculations, he must ensure he succeeds,” said Mr Wangwe.
The Kiharu MP seat, which he would be seeking for a third term in 2027, and which appears his to lose, is another option being cited.
Mr Nyoro appears conflicted at this critical decision point, insisting it is too early to align himself or make a public commitment.
“It is very early. It is not political wisdom to lay all your cards bare this early. By 2027, all these formations you see will have changed, and it is then that it will be clear where to throw my lot,” he recently told NTV.
On January 14, 2026, Mr Nyoro told Citizen TV that “what is certain is that I am totally disappointed with the United Democratic Alliance that sponsored my election as Kiharu MP… we had promised not to borrow, to prioritise the education sector, and to practise political tolerance”.
He added: “For that matter, it should not be in doubt that I am engaging with like-minded Kenyans to pursue the good dream we had for this country… I still believe in the good promises we made.”
He did not rule out joining or launching a political party, saying: “For now, let us watch events as they unfold.”
Mr Nyoro has continued to puzzle political analysts with his bold statements critical of the government, but which stop short of directly attacking President Ruto. He has also defended both Mr Gachagua and Mr Kenyatta without formally aligning with their causes, instead echoing their rhetoric about a country in need of liberation.
“All I desire for Mr Nyoro is that he gets his politics right. He is one of our political stars with a future. He must be wise not to fall into the trap of being perceived as working against Mt Kenya interests, for the punishment could be severe,” says Kikuyu Council of Elders chairman Mr Wachira Kiago.
Mr Kiago added, “Nyoro is highly rated in the region, and many would love to see him survive the alignment storm and emerge stronger, relevant, and grounded to pursue greater ambitions beyond 2027.”
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, once considered a potential successor, has been politically adrift, operating as a "lone ranger" and avoiding public alliances with either President Ruto or the Gachagua-led opposition.
