A pattern is emerging within the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), where party leader Rigathi Gachagua publicly promises free and fair nominations while simultaneously endorsing preferred candidates across the country.
Beyond Mt Kenya, Mr Gachagua has also openly backed loyalists in the Maa, Nairobi and Coast regions, where he has described some aspirants as his “in-laws and cousins.”
The endorsements have triggered concern among some aspiring politicians who now fear the party is gradually becoming a preserve of loyalists and financiers rather than a platform offering equal opportunity.
A member of the DCP Aspirants Caucus, Simon Kamau, warned that the party risks shutting out ordinary aspirants.
“There are those of us without obscene wealth who believe in Mr Gachagua and DCP. But we are seeing a pattern of untouchable loyalists and financiers. We hear that those who amassed wealth while in government could be welcomed to compete against us. If that happens, DCP risks becoming an exclusive club,” he said.
The debate resurfaced on Sunday when Mr Gachagua attended a church service in Kirinyaga County, where he publicly praised and appealed for support for Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, Senator Kamau Murango and Baragwi MP David Mathenge.
Pointing to Ms Maina, he described her as a fearless defender of the Mt Kenya region.

“Look at Njeri. She may be small in stature but she has tremendous substance. When Gen Z protesters were being abducted and charged with terrorism, she was in court defending them. When her time comes in 2027, reward her on behalf of the community,” he said.
Mr Gachagua also singled out Senator Murango, describing him as one of the community's steadfast leaders who had remained firm despite what he termed government intimidation of dissenting politicians. MR Murango’s name has featured prominently in political circles as one of those eyeing the Kirinyaga governor's seat.
“As the leader entrusted by the community, I have a duty to identify men and women who cannot sell out our people to the highest bidder. Senator Murango is one of them and when he presents himself to you, please support him,” he said.
The endorsement comes even though former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici recently joined Mr Gachagua's camp and has declared interest in the Kirinyaga governorship on a DCP ticket, setting up a potential contest with Mr Murango.
Mr Gachagua also praised Baragwi MP David Mathenge, crediting him with obtaining conservatory orders that temporarily delayed the swearing-in of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki following his impeachment in October 2024.

“He rejected millions bribe because he believed protecting the community was more important than personal gain. He is a leader worth supporting,” Mr Gachagua said.
The endorsements appear to contradict Mr Gachagua's repeated assurances that DCP nominations will be free, fair and determined solely by party members.
Aware of the criticism, in Kirinyaga he sought to clarify that he was not issuing direct tickets.
“I know the people will make the final decision during party primaries. But I have a duty to throw in a good word for those I have found to be outstanding in defending the cause of ensuring maximum protection for our interests…I need foot soldiers who will help me take this community to where it desires to get. Do not take my word as an endorsement but a proposal of tried and tested community heroes,” he said.
Even so, Mr Gachagua has repeatedly singled out preferred leaders in different parts of the country.

Among those he has publicly praised are Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu, whom he has frequently described as one of his closest political allies.
“John Methu is my right-hand man. When I am away, I leave community matters in his hands. He understands our mission of keeping President William Ruto in check and he is among the leaders I am grooming for the future,” he said.
As interim DCP secretary-general, Mr Gachagua said, Senator Methu would play a central role in preparing the party for the 2027 General Election.
In the National Assembly, Mr Gachagua has also openly backed several parliamentary hopefuls including Edward Muriu (Gatanga), Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), Onesmus Ngogoyo (Kajiado North), Amos Mwago (Starehe), Kamande Mwafrika (Roysambu) and Jane Kihara (Naivasha).
Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia has also received repeated praise, particularly following DCP's emphatic victory in last week’s Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Together with Senator Methu, she helped marshal support for DCP candidate Kamau Ngotho, who won with 35,440 votes against UDA's Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who garnered 5,540 votes.
“These two have written themselves into our history books. Wanjiku Muhia is a gem. She has fought courageously for this community and deserves our support,” Mr Gachagua said.
Political analyst Malila Munyoki said the endorsements reflect a broader reality in Kenyan politics where party leaders wield enormous influence over nominations despite promises of internal democracy.
“Nobody should imagine they can simply walk into DCP and successfully challenge Mr Gachagua or his closest allies. Those who stood with him during impeachment, confronted goons and remained loyal occupy a special place in the party and are not easy to dislodge,” he said.
Mr Munyoki advised aspirants to carefully assess political realities before investing heavily in nomination campaigns.
“My advice is that aspirants should not take promises of free and fair nominations literally, especially in constituencies where Mr Gachagua has already identified his preferred candidates. Every political party has protected loyalists and financiers. Some seats that are effectively reserved, and serious politicians should recognise that early,” he went on.
He argued that this was not unique to DCP but reflected the structure of most Kenyan political parties.
“Every party leader keeps a register of loyalists, financiers and political foot soldiers who are rewarded over time. That is how politics works,” he said.
“Former President Uhuru Kenyatta recently warned leaders insulting him that they would have no place in his party. Political parties are private political investments for their founders. Internal democracy is often preached publicly but managed differently behind the scenes,” he said.
He added that coalition negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections could further complicate the ambitions of aspiring candidates.
“When party leaders negotiate alliances, presidential tickets and power-sharing deals, many aspirants' political dreams are sacrificed long before nominations begin. Anyone seeking office must understand those realities if they hope to survive politically,” mr munyoki said.
