President William Ruto has eulogised former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, who died on February 20 aged 63, as a “principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity”.

“His death is a great loss to our country,” he added.

In his message, former President Uhuru Kenyatta said: “Throughout his time in office, he played a pivotal role in shaping our nation's electoral landscape, often navigating intricate challenges with remarkable resilience. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May they find strength and solace in cherished memories.”

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described Mr Chebukati as an “eminent jurist, steadfast defender of the rule of law, and dedicated public servant.”

The Speaker added: “His legacy of integrity and service will continue to inspire future generations of legal minds and public servants dedicated to upholding the rule of law and advancing democracy.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that Mr Chebukati will be “remembered for his principled leadership, courage and fidelity to the Constitution”.

“A true patriot and a man of immense integrity, Chebukati professionally steered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through two elections,” Mr Murkomen stated.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said Mr Chebukati’s journey “was marked by courage, firmness, fidelity to the law, steadfastness and a commitment to the democratic process”.

“Today, we grieve the loss of a leader who stood firm in the face of history,” stated Mr Duale.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti stated that Mr Chebukati was “a man of integrity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles”.

“Chebukati will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the voice of the people was heard. His contributions to our democracy will continue to inspire generations to come,” she stated.
