President William Ruto has extended Dr Simon Gicharu’s term as the non-executive chairperson of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) for another three years.

KICD is a State agency responsible for implementing educational policies relating to tertiary education and training.

The Head of State said in a Gazette notice dated October 16, 2026, that the appointment takes effect immediately.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 5(2)(a) of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, re-appoint Simon Gicharu as the Non-executive Chairperson of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, for a period of three years, with effect from the 16th October, 2026,” President Ruto said in the Gazette notice.

Dr Gicharu, who also holds the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) honour, was first appointed to KICD in October 2023 for a three-year term.

His reappointment comes as the State agency strives to implement the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, which is replacing the 8-4-4 system in phases.

Dr Gicharu is the founder and chairman of Mount Kenya University in Kenya and Mount Kigali University in Rwanda.

In the same Gazette notice, President William Ruto revoked the appointment of Bishop Margaret Wanjiru as chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission and appointed former Principal Secretary Nelson Marwa to replace her.

Mr Marwa’s appointment takes effect immediately, and his term runs for three years.

“The President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, William Samoei Ruto, appoints Nelson Marwa to be the Chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission for a period of three years, with effect from October 16, 2026,” the notice read in part.

The Nairobi Rivers Commission is tasked with coordinating the rehabilitation of the Nairobi River Basin, which connects several counties in the metropolitan region surrounding Nairobi County.
