Foreign countries have issued security advisories to their citizens ahead of planned demonstrations in Kenya on June 25, as the country marks the second anniversary of the 2024 anti-government protests.
The UK and the US are among those who have warned their citizens of possible unrest, traffic disruption and security risks.
In an alert, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advised British nationals to avoid political gatherings, large crowds and unnecessary travel to central business districts and major urban centres where demonstrations are likely to take place.
The advisory comes amid growing anticipation of nationwide protests expected to commemorate the Gen Z-led demonstrations that swept across Kenya in 2024. Those protests drew thousands of young people to the streets in opposition to the Finance Bill and broader governance concerns.
“Protests, demonstrations and strikes are common in Kenya, particularly in Nairobi. These events often cause traffic disruption and can lead to violence. A number of demonstrators have been injured and killed in recent years,” the advisory states.
The British government warned that tensions could persist beyond June 25 and extend into early July, a period associated with key dates linked to mass demonstrations including the historic Saba Saba on July 7.
“The situation could change quickly, especially on key dates, including the anniversaries of the 2024 Finance Bill protests between June 25 and July 7,” read the alert.
The warning follows a similar security alert issued by the United States Embassy in Nairobi on June 18, urging American citizens to exercise heightened vigilance ahead of the planned demonstrations.
The embassy noted that protests could occur across the country, including in Nairobi’s Central Business District and other urban centres, potentially causing roadblocks, traffic congestion and disruptions to public transport.
“June 25 is the anniversary of protests that occurred in Kenya during the past two years. Demonstrations may occur at any time, but the potential for protests is higher around June 25,” the embassy said.
The US mission further advised its citizens to keep vehicle doors locked, windows rolled up while travelling, and to inform family members and friends of their whereabouts. Americans were also encouraged to review personal security plans and carry copies of their passports and valid Kenyan visas.
