The track at Hayward Field in Oregon, was set for fast racing as the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships gained momentum. However, as the bell rang for the final lap, Josephine Sembeyo, a 19-year-old student from Kajiado County, faced an athlete’s worst nightmare when she got tangled in a mid-race fall and lost a shoe.
But showing incredible grit, Sembeyo did not let the setback stop her. She stayed focused, fought her way back into contention, and used a powerful final sprint to cross the finish line in 4:16.73, securing a historic women’s 1,500 meters gold medal.
Sembeyo edged out the US runner Claire Stegall by just 0.04 seconds, ending Kenya’s 14-year wait for a junior women's world title in the event.
This incredible win leads a strong new group of breakout Kenyan track stars emerging from the Oregon championships. Other gold medal winners included Wilson Chepkwech (1,500m), Emmanuel Kiprono (3,000m), and Frankline Kibet (5,000m). David Kapaiko Sekento (1,500m), Nehemiah Kipgeno (5,000m), and Emmanuel Lemiso (3,000m s/c) won silver medals, while Nicholas Kitum Losiwareng (3,000m s/c), Caren Chepchirchir (1,500m), Joyline Chepkemoi (5,000m), and Anatasha Cheptoo (3,000m s/c) bagged bronze.
This brought Kenya's medal tally to 11, improving on the country's performance in Lima, Peru, where Kenya finished fifth with seven medals (3 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze). At the 2026 championships, US led the standings with 24 medals, including 12 gold.

The victories are a life-changing breakthrough for the young athletes, moving them from the junior ranks directly into the global spotlight. For Kenya, it showcases the country’s deep talent pool and re-establishes its dominance in middle-distance running. As for Sembeyo, she is already looking to the future, hoping to run alongside her mentor, Faith Kipyegon.
These strong performances have set a solid foundation for Kenya's young athletes as they prepare to transition to the senior level, with their sights set on major milestones at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Kenya’s impressive showing in Eugene once again highlights the importance of investing in junior athletes as the country prepares for the upcoming championships.
For Sembeyo, winning the 1500m gold medal was the culmination of a journey combining education and athletics, which are helping her to overcome some of the challenges faced by girls in her home area of Kajiado County.
“I’m so excited to have won the race! Faith Kipyegon called me and told me to do my best. She told me to try to go home with a medal, even though she knew the race would be tough. I didn’t want to let her or the Kenyans down. I’m happy to have hung on and won gold despite the issue with my shoe,” she said.
Hailing from a region where many girls still face challenges such as early marriage and FGM, Sembeyo has chosen education and athletics as the means to forge her own path in life.
Her success in Eugene has elevated her from a promising junior athlete to a role model for other young girls in her community, demonstrating how sport and education can open doors and provide alternatives to circumstances that might otherwise limit opportunities.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Kiprono completed a remarkable turnaround by claiming gold in the men's 3000m after narrowly missing the world record by microseconds.
The Form Three student at St Francis Kimuron High School in Elgeyo Marakwet was determined to win gold after coming second in the 8km junior race at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Florida, USA, in January.
“I was hungry for the gold medal after missing out on it during the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Florida. I’m hoping to be part of Team Kenya at next year’s World Championships, as well as at the LA Olympics in 2028, where I plan to compete in the 5,000m,” said Kiprono as he targets a place among the country’s senior stars.
Frankline Kibet believes that his 5000m gold could mark the start of a new era for Kenya in this event. Kenya has struggled to win the men’s 5,000m Olympic title since John Ngugi won it in 1988. The world title, on the other hand, has eluded Kenya since Benjamin Limo won it in Helsinki in 2005. Last month, Kenya reclaimed the Commonwealth men’s 5,000m title in Glasgow through Mathew Kipsang (13:23.61), ending a 12-year drought.
“Having won the junior men’s 5,000m title, I intend to work hard and win in the senior ranks,” said Kibet.
Another Form Three student at St Francis Kimuron, Wilson Chepkwech, also demonstrated the ambition required to make the challenging transition to senior level after winning the 1500m title.
Chepkwech said that he was aiming for nothing less than victory in Eugene. “I refused to let my rivals stand between me and the gold medal,” he said.
The youngsters' immediate challenge will be their transition to senior athletics, where competition is a lot tougher.
National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) president Shadrack Maluki, said that preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games have already begun, and he challenged sports federations to emulate Athletics Kenya’s programme for developing talent at the grassroots level.
He said that the foundation for the young athletes’ transition must be laid early and hailed Team Kenya’s performance in Oregon. “The results demonstrate the impact of sustained investment in young athletes,” he said.
He said that the NOC-K is determined to assemble one of Kenya’s strongest teams for the Olympics in Los Angeles with sights on improving the country’s medal tally.
Maluki warned sports federations against leaving it until the Olympic year to start preparing athletes, insisting that the process must begin at grassroots level by identifying and nurturing young talent, and providing athletes with the necessary support to help them progress through the ranks.
