The government has announced that the construction of the 60,000-seater Talanta Sports City Stadium in Jamhuri grounds, Nairobi, is over 80 per cent complete.

Speaking on Friday after leading an inspection of the upcoming facility earmarked for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the project will be completed within the set timelines.

“This is proof that we are on course to deliver this project. The government is assuring Kenyans that Afcon will be held and we have the facilities to execute that tournament,” said Mwangi.

Defense PS Patrick Mariru said most of the critical work at the facility, which included the installation of the massive concrete structure, was complete.

“The bulk of the work is done. That is over 80 per cent. What remains can be done within a very short period,” said Mariru.

The stadium will have cost Sh44.7 billion by the time of its completion.

Kenya will co-host the 2027 Afcon with neighbours Uganda and Tanzania from June 19 to July 18.

When President William Ruto led a groundbreaking ceremony for the building of the modern stadium on March 1, 2024, he said it would be completed by December last year.

However, with the contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation, missing that deadline, its completion date was revised to March this year.

President Ruto pledged to rename the facility, when completed, to Raila Odinga International Stadium, in honour of the former Prime Minister who died on October 15 last year.

Designed as a football and rugby stadium only, the arena will have several installations, including a modern canopy, a presidential pavilion, 52 luxury skyboxes, parking capacity of 3,000 vehicles, and an outdoor training facility.
