Fans will be treated to potentially explosive fixtures on Saturday when the curtain falls on Nyanza region secondary schools' Term Two championships at Kisumu Boys High School grounds and at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

Karabok Boys from Homa Bay face Agai Secondary from Kisumu in the boys’ football final on Saturday, in what has been dubbed ‘battle of the underdogs.’ Although Karabok are regular campaigners at the regional level and have even won the title before, they have struggled to make an impact in the championship in recent years. Agai are also ranked outsiders.

In the second semi-final match, Siaya’s St Mary’s Yala will take on hosts Kisumu Boys in a potentially explosive encounter.

Karabok’s head coach, Gordon Otieno, believes the underdog tag has worked in his team’s favour so far in the tournament, and they might just be the surprise team of the tournament.

“Many teams have underrated us, and that’s what has driven our success so far. It’s been our greatest strength since day one, and we are prepared to go all the way.” Otieno told Nation Sport on Friday at Kisumu Boys High School.

Karabok last won the regional title in 2009 and went on to reach the semi-finals at the national level.

Otieno, who took charge of the team in 2020, credited his players’ commitment and resilience.

“We take every match as it comes. The journey has been tough, but I commend my boys for their sacrifice and determination they have shown so far in the tournament,” he said.

Agai's team manager, Julius Ouma, believes the chemistry among his players gives them an edge over their opponents.

“These boys have grown together. They know each other’s rhythm, strengths, and weaknesses. That bond gives us confidence. We believe 2025 is our year to shine,” Ouma said.

In the girls’ category, Kobala Girls from Homa Bay are on a mission to reclaim the regional football title they last won in 2022.

They advanced to the finals after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over favourites Nyakach Girls from Kisumu County, at Moi Stadium on Friday.

In netball, defending champions, Oyugi Ogango from Migori, will play Homa Bay’s Asumbi Girls in the final.
