The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 2024 African Nations Championship (Chan) and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have announced plans to set up fan zones in Nairobi for the crucial Zambia versus Kenya Group 'A' match at Moi International Sport Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday from 3pm.

The decision by the LOC and FKF is in response to the high demand for tickets of Harambee Stars matches and the unrestrained enthusiasm by Kenyans to attend them even without tickets.

The FKF has in fact been sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) because of fans breaching security barriers at Harambee Stars matches to enter the stadium.

The latest incident happened on Sunday at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi resulting in facility being filled beyond its capacity of 48,000.

Following the incident Caf announced that only 27,000 fans will henceforth be allowed to attend Kenya’s matches at Kasarani, during the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship.

Caf further warned that continued breach of security may lead to Kenya playing their home matches away from home.

This came barely a week after the Caf Disciplinary Board imposed a total fine of Sh2.5 million ($20,000) on Football Kenya Federation (FKF) due to breach of CAF Disciplinary Code, as well as CAF Safety and Security Regulations during the group’s two matches held on August 3.

Acts of hooliganism were also witnessed ahead of Kenya’s 1-1 draw against Angola on Thursday last week. Caf said these incidents “present unacceptable risks to spectators, staff, and the integrity of the tournament.”

CAF also directed Kenya’s Local Organising Committee to launch a public media campaign reinforcing safety protocols and entry requirements.
