What you need to know:

  • The record 21-time Kenyan champions are on 12 points from five matches, one less than leaders Kakamega Homeboyz.
  • In another match played Kasarani Annex, Murang’a Seal came back from 2-0 down to hold Posta Rangers 2-2.

Former champions Gor Mahia continued their good run in the Kenyan Premier League on Thursday, beating Mathare United 2-0 in a midweek match played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

With the victory, Gor Mahia, who were fourth in the standings table before the match, have now jumped to second on the log.

The record 21-time Kenyan champions are on 12 points from five matches, one less than leaders Kakamega Homeboyz who have played six matches.

Shariff Musa opened the scoring for the former champions in the 48th minute after he was put through by Paul Ochuoga, before Bryson Wangai adding the second in added time to ensure maximum points for K’Ogalo.

In another match played on Thursday at Kasarani Annex, Murang’a Seal came back from 2-0 down to hold Posta Rangers 2-2.

Former AFC Leopards player, Caleb Olilo, put the mailmen ahead in the 24th minute before Faustin Ojiambo added the second 11 minutes later.

Wasted opportunity

Murang’a Seal pulled a goal back in the 67th minute before levelling the scores in the 75th minute through Joe Waithira.

At Kasarani Stadium, both teams created chances, with Gor Mahia’s Patrice Essombe coming closest, before crossing to Musa who failed to convert from a close ranger.

Essombe later failed to finish off a golden opportunity in the 15th minute when his header sailed just over the bar, just minutes later.

Mathare United thought they had taken the leader in the 27th minute when Kevin Ouru finished off a counterattack, only for the assistant referee to flag him for offside.

The deadlock was finally broken by Musa three minutes into the second half.

Mathare’s hopes of coming back in the match were further dented when substitute Derrick Anami limped off injured just minutes after he had come on.
