After failing to clinch the 2026 Cecafa Club Championships title following a 2-1 loss to Rwanda’s Rayon Sports on Friday evening, Gor Mahia have now shifted focus to fine-tuning the team and building cohesion in the squad ahead of their daunting CAF Champions League campaign, and defence of their Kenyan league title.
In the thrilling final held at the 45,508-seater Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, K’Ogalo saw their hopes of winning their fourth Cecafa Club Cup crashed by a 97th minute overhead strike by substitute Daniel Muhoza.
For the victory, Rayon pocketed $30,000 (Sh 3.8 million) while Gor earned $20,000 (Sh2.5 million). Al Hilal received $10,000 (Sh1.2 million) for finishing third in the 12-team tournament.
On Friday, Rayon took the lead in the 27th minute through Kameni Herman’s goal but Gor equalised in the 53rd minute courtesy of speedy Shariff Musa.

With neither side able to find the winner in regular time, the match went into 30 minutes extra time where Rayon emerged champions thanks to Muhoza’s beautiful goal.
Similar to other participants, Gor used the two-week tournament to prepare for their campaign next season where their real test will come in the CAF Champions League.
The 22-time Kenyan champions face a stern test in the CAF Champions League after being drawn against Egypt’s Pyramids FC in the first preliminary round of the competition starting next month. Pyramids lifted the prestigious continental title in the 2024/25 season.
Going by their performance in the final of the Cecafa Club Cup, Gor still need to sharpen attack, defence and goalkeeping departments. While the Kenyan champions dictated the exchange, they were undone by numerous wasted chances. Midfielders Alpha Onyango, Enock Machaka and forward Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw all failed to convert their chances.
Gor have bolstered its attack with the signing of strikers Paul Okoth, Hansel Ochieng and Ugandan Dennis Omedi and winger David Okoth. Paul Okoth was the runner up in the 2025/26 FKF-PL Golden Boot race with 18 goals. While he scored two goals on the way to the final, he was substituted early in the second half following a quiet first half performance.
He was replaced by Ghanaian striker Ebenezer Assifuah. Ochieng came on late in the second half but failed to make an impact while Omedi did not feature in the match since he was registered with Rwandan Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club (APR FC).
Defensive lapse played a key role in all the two goals that Gor conceded in the match. In the build up to Herman’s opener, Gor’ defenders failed to block a dangerous cross captain Emmanuel Nshimiyimana.
Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi was also partly at fault for failing to block the ball. For Muhoza’s winner, Gor’s defence gave him room to sprint forward before scoring with an overhead kick.
Throughout the tournament, Gor had to cope without the service of their key central defender and captain Sylvester Owino after he suffered a right calf sprain.

Aiming for more success next season, Gor have signed a total of 10 players, with the rest being goalkeepers Humphrey Katasi and Michael Onyango, midfielders Ebenezer Ocran (Ghana) and Lesley Otieno and defender Daniel Sakari.
When he came under attack following Gor’s 1-0 loss to Uganda’s Vipers SC in their second group match of the tournament, during which he rested several first-team players, coach Charles Akonnor defended the decision, saying the matches provide the best platform to test all the players in his big squad.
As part of their pre-season, Gor Mahia lost 1-0 to Sudan’s Al Merrick SC in Kigali on Saturday morning.
Pyramids are a tough test for Gor Mahia in their quest to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League. K’Ogalo have yet to reach the group stage of the Champions League in its current format.
