Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed has denied involvement in the alleged Sh42.48 million fraud concerning the provision of insurance cover for the delayed 2024 Africa Nations Championship (Chan).
While addressing the press on Saturday at FKF’s headquarters located at Goal Project in Kasarani, Nairobi, Mohammed said it was the Confederation of African Football (CAF) which procured the insurance cover for the tournament, and that the federation did not pay any money for it.
“The procurement for insurance for Chan 2024 was conducted within the framework of the CAF Host Agreement, which defines the structures and processes governing tournament operations, including the sourcing of key service providers,” Mohammed said on Saturday.
“The required insurance cover for Chan 2024 was procured by CAF, not myself, and it was duly secured and maintained throughout the tournament. Contrary to the malicious reports, FKF did not transfer or pay any money to any insurance company for Chan competitions,” he added.

Mohammed did not take questions from the press, citing “sensitivity of the matter and the ongoing investigations.”
The FKF president has been in the spotlight since Monday following allegations that FKF wired the wired $328,735 (Sh42.48 million) to Riskwell for the Chan’s insurance cover, despite the firm not being licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) to operate as an insurance brokerage firm in 2025.
Whistleblower Ustadh Okello Kimathi brought the alleged fraud to light on Monday, revealing on social media that he had furnished the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) with full details. He added that he had also shared the documents with the FKF NEC and the National Assembly’s Committee on Sports and Culture.
Mr Kimathi gave FKF’s National Executive Committee seven days to issue a public statement outlining its course of action on the matter; failure to which he would escalate the matter.
On Friday, FKF’s National Executive Committee (NEC) suspended Mohammed, Acting Chief Executive Officer and General Secretary Dennis Gicheru and nominated NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim following allegations of Sh42.48 million fraud relating to procurement of insurance cover for the delayed 2024 Chan.
FKF’s NEC appointed Mohammed’s deputy, McDonald Mariga, to serve as acting president pending completion of the investigation into the alleged fraud.
“The purported held on April 24th, 2026, was not convened in accordance with the FKF Constitution (2017) and is therefore irregular, unlawful and unconstitutional. Consequently, any decisions arriving from it are null and void,” Mohammed said in the statement.
