The whistles should have sounded this weekend.
Instead, the stadia across the country stayed shut, the fixture list became paperwork, and Kenyan football returned to the venue it knows far too well; a courtroom.
The Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL), the nation’s flagship competition, was scheduled to kick off. A High Court injunction, however, froze it in the newest entry in a long history of disputes that interrupt the game just as it gathers speed.
The league pays thousands of players, coaches, referees and administrators, many of them young people trying to build a career. Around them sits a second economy of stadium managers, security details, stewards, bus operators and the vendors who set up outside the turnstiles on match day and go home with a week’s earnings in a tin.
This week, Collins Sichenje, formerly of AFC Leopards, and Timothy Ouma, once of Nairobi City Stars, played for Charlton Athletic against Tottenham Hotspur in a Carabao Cup game in London.
In Spain, Job Ochieng, a product of Ligi Ndogo, started for Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu and supplied the pass for his team’s equaliser against Real Madrid.
Those are players formed on Kenyan pitches, flourishing in places where the structures around them hold. At home, the structures keep giving way. The present dispute begins where these things usually begin; at the bottom of the table.
Kariobangi Sharks finished 16th last season. Under the rules in force when the campaign started, the bottom two clubs went down automatically and the 16th-placed side met the third-placed team from the National Super League in a playoff.
In 2025, the Football Kenya Federation rewrote the regulation, scrapping that playoff and moving to three automatic relegations and three automatic promotions. Sharks, Bidco United and Sofapaka went down. Migori Youth, 3K FC and Mombasa United came up.

An activist challenged the amendment at the Sports Disputes Tribunal, arguing that rewriting the system in the middle of a season was unfair, and that the federation’s National Executive Committee had no authority to make the change without the approval of the General Assembly.
The federation insisted the amendment was lawful. The tribunal agreed with the federation. The case then travelled to the High Court, and the Court stopped the season.
The federation says playing on would risk contempt of court. It also argues that under Fifa statutes, any challenge to the tribunal’s ruling belongs before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. Bypassing that route, it warns, could invite a Fifa suspension, the sort of penalty that locks a country’s clubs and national teams out of the game beyond its borders.
An urgent application to lift or suspend the injunction has been filed. The court will hear the federation’s jurisdictional objection on September 21, followed by the main appeal on September 24. Until a judge rules, the freeze holds and every club waits.
Sharks, of all teams, understand what tampering with structure can cost. In 2017, they benefited from a decision to enlarge the top-flight from 16 clubs to 18. The reaction was severe. SuperSport, the league’s broadcaster, walked away, taking with it a reported Sh500 million that Kenyan football has never replaced.
Nearly a decade later, clubs are still operating in the shadow of that lost contract, chasing sponsorships that cover a fraction of what a television deal once paid.
The country has lived through worse. At the start of the century, a split among administrators produced two rival top divisions running at the same time, a spectacle that told sponsors and supporters everything they needed to know about how the sport was governed.

For now, the damage is practical and immediate. Clubs cannot budget, plan or sell tickets to a season that has no start date. Players and coaches whose earnings depend on matches being played have no idea when they will next be paid to do their jobs.
Teams that had booked buses and hotel rooms have cancelled them. Sponsors who signed this year are watching an asset they paid for sit idle, and companies weighing a deal have every reason to wait for a calmer year.
Weeks lost in September do not vanish. They are pushed to the far end of the season, compressing rest periods and squeezing the windows reserved for national team duty. That matters more than usual now, because Kenya will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania.
A functioning, professionally run domestic league is meant to be one of the foundations of that tournament, rather than one more thing to be repaired before the visitors arrive.
Dan Shikanda, a member of the federation’s National Executive Committee, has not pretended the situation is anything other than serious. “The uncertainty is not good for the game,” he said. “We are in a bad position because the matter is in court and, once it is there, you cannot simply proceed.”
The questions the federation has yet to answer are the obvious ones. Why alter relegation rules in the middle of a season? Who weighed the fairness of applying them to clubs that had already played most of their fixtures? Was a legal challenge not the predictable result? And what is the plan if the case runs for months rather than days?
The clubs are not waiting for those answers. Premier League chairmen have written to Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, asking for an urgent audience.
“Sir, we are reaching out as the Football Kenya Federation Premier League leadership and chairmen’s caucus,” the letter reads. “We are requesting that you kindly grant us audience to meet with you for a courtesy call at your earliest convenience.” The wording is deferential, but the message is not.
It reflects a league that has reached the limits of patience, when a group of clubs is forced to plead for intervention because the sport’s governing structures have once again failed to provide direction.
There is no shortage of raw material in Kenya. The nation has great players, and this month alone has furnished fresh proof of it at Charlton and at the Bernabeu. It has crowds that fill stands for derbies that predate independence.
It has commercial partners willing to spend when the product is stable. What it lacks is an administration that treats the season as something to be protected rather than litigated.
One weekend without football is a modest loss. A pattern of them is a national game being dismantled, one injunction at a time. The Premier League deserves better. So do the players who fill it, and the supporters who pay for it.
