Today, the whistle will finally sound to start the 2026/2027 Football Kenya Federation Premier League.
After two months of injunctions and court dates over the status of Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United in the league, the season can finally begin, even as the verdict on the 18th team in the competition remains pending.
The promotion play-offs involving Mombasa United and Kariobangi Sharks ended in chaos on Tuesday after the second leg match in Nairobi was abandoned midway through the second half following an attack on the centre referee by fans.
The aggregate score was then finely balanced at 3-3. FKF is expected to rule on the match any day soon.
The real league action begins at 2pm at Nairobi’s Police Sacco Stadium, where new-look Mathare United host revamped APS Bomet.
Mathare have signed 13 players, including Victor Omune from AFC Leopards, while APS Bomet have brought in 11, among them Owen Mboya and Bonface Mwangemi from Bandari, while releasing two.
Two hours and 15 minutes later, Posta Rangers will face Shabana at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga County.
Shabana enter a historic chapter under Egyptian coach Ahmed Fathi, their first foreign head coach.
Fathi has overseen a major overhaul at Gusii, with 16 departures and 15 arrivals. New faces include Dennis Wanjala and Alex Onchwari from Tusker, and Lazarazu Otieno from Posta Rangers.
Brian Michira remains central to Shabana’s eternal title hopes. The attacking midfielder has been the club’s top scorer for the past two seasons and was named the 2021 National Super League Young Player of the Year.
His fitness could prove crucial as Shabana begin their new era. Posta have quietly strengthened too, signing 12 players, including James Ashisoma and Mark Shaban, while releasing five.
An attractive fixture on paper has Ulinzi Stars hosting a formidable looking Tusker at Ulinzi Sports Complex today.

Tusker, the Mozzart Bet Cup holders with CAF Confederation Cup commitments, have released 21 players and recruited 15, including Nigerian Victor Chukwuemeka and Ivorian Aboubacar Doumbia.
Captain Aboud Omar’s return from Kenya Police adds stability to the brewers. At 33, the Kenya international is one of the league’s finest left-backs.
Ulinzi have added 10 players, including Issa Rashid, Jacob Onyango, Billy Owuor and energetic Kenya Under-23 forward Adrian Oloo.
Newly promoted 3K FC may fancy their chances at home to Mara Sugar at Moi Stadium, Embu. Mara enter their third top-flight season after surviving relegation last season.
The recruited 12 players, with the most notable being Instine Wanjala from Shabana.
Their hosts recruited 12 players, including Shaban Mwachokozi from Bandari and brothers Edwin and David Simiyu from Kenya Police.
Debutants Migori Youth, who are the reigning NSL champions, host Kenya Police at Awendo Green Stadium.
They may have lost their jewel, 20-year-old striker Syphus Otieno, the NSL’s second-highest scorer, to Nairobi United, but Migori will want to show they belong at this level.
They have signed 16 players, including Francis Memusi from Murang’a Seal and Philemon Nyakwaka from APS Bomet.
Police, coached by Nicholas Muyoti, will be eager to unleash newly signed Elvis Rupia. The 2023 record-breaking Kenyan Premier League top scorer with 27 goals will want to announce his return with a bang.
Nairobi United will meet KCB at Police Sacco Stadium from 4pm. It will be interesting to see how Nairobi United perform under Belgian coach Patrick Aussems, formerly of AFC Leopards and Simba SC.
Aussems has brought in very useful signings, including goalkeeper Faruk Shikhalo, Brian Musa from Police and Syphus Otieno. Regulars, internationals Ovella Ochieng and Kevin Otiende give Nairobi a championship look.
However, KCB, under experienced Robert Matano, will be no pushovers.
Meanwhile, big guns, record 22-Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and their nemesis AFC Leopards have no game this weekend.
Gor Mahia open their title defence against Murang’a Seal under the Nyayo National Stadium floodlights on Tuesday, while AFC Leopards hit the ground the following day at the same venue against Bandari in an afternoon kick-off.
Gor Mahia were awarded prize money of Sh15 million for winning the league last season, the biggest payout in the competition’s history.
