A thrilling showdown is expected at this year’s Magical Kenya Open, with five past winners among the 144 players set to compete at Muthaiga Golf Club from February 20 to 23.
The DP World Tour event, which has been brought forward from its usual March schedule, promises high stakes as the field battles for a $2.5 million (Sh320 million) prize purse.
Leading the line-up is defending champion Darius van Driel from the Netherlands, who clinched victory last year with an impressive 14-under-par finish.
Van Driel, now part of Category 3—which includes winners of Race to Dubai tournaments with prize funds of $2 million (Sh258 million) and above, as well as the 2024 Olympic men’s golf champion, Scottie Scheffler,—returns to Muthaiga aiming for back-to-back success.
Joining him is China’s Li Haotong, who comes into the tournament fresh off his victory at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters last weekend, where he posted a 16-under-par finish. The 29-year-old will be hunting for his fifth DP World Tour title.
The 56th edition of the Kenya Open, hosted at Muthaiga for the fourth consecutive year, will also feature former champions Jorge Campillo (2023), Ashun Wu (2022), Justin Harding (2021), Guido Migliozzi (2019), and Sebastian Söderberg (2016).
With six amateurs included in the field, the competition is expected to be fierce. The overall winner among professionals will take home $425,000 (approximately Sh54.4 million) along with 1,000 points toward the Race to Dubai rankings.
Among the Kenyan amateurs preparing for the tournament, Michael Karanga is currently competing in the Rwanda Open, using it as a warm-up.
After a challenging performance at the Africa Amateur Golf Championship in South Africa last week, where a costly error on a par-four hole saw him finish eighth, Karanga is eager to redeem himself.
Leading at the close of yesterday’s second round on three-under-par 141, two shots ahead of Hiyayezu Jean D’Amour of Rwanda, Karanga remains optimistic.
“It will be nice winning here, as it will motivate me for the Kenya Open,” he said.
Joining Karanga in Rwanda are Adel Balala, who sits third at three-over-par 147, and national team captain John Lejirmah, tied for sixth on six-over-par 150.
A total of 17 Kenyan professionals, including several players set to compete in the Magical Kenya Open, are also in action at the Rwanda Open, battling for a share of the $50,000 prize fund.
Veteran golfer Dismas Indiza was leading the Kenyan pack at three-under-par after just three holes in the second round.
However, Rwandan Celestin Nsanzuwera maintained a strong lead at 10-under-par with six holes to play.
Other Kenyan qualifiers for the Magical Kenya Open, Greg Snow, Njoroge Kibugu, David Wakhu, and Samuel Njoroge, were still within the second round cut in Rwanda.
