With his brilliant performance in the inaugural Sunshine Development Tour- East Africa Swing, which has landed him in the main Sunshine Tour in South Africa, Kenya’s young Njoroge Kibugu is certainly the pro golfer to watch in Africa.

Besides topping the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing, Kibugu is also ranked fourth in the PGK Equator Tour Order of Merit behind Dismas Indiza, Samuel Njoroge Chege, and the tour leader Greg Snow.

This means Kibugu, 22, has already booked his slot in the 2026 Magical Kenya Open, a DP World Tour event set for Karen Country Club from February 19 to 22, 2026.

Now ranked 1,536 in the golf World Rankings, the highest position by a professional player in East Africa, Kibugu’s qualification for the Sunshine Tour means he now has an excellent chance of enhancing his position and perhaps joining other leading golfers at the top of the world rankings.

Playing in the Sunshine Tour also offers a player an excellent chance of getting an invitation to play in the lucrative DP World Tour and Asian Tour events

Depending on how he performs, Kibugu, who turned pro in 2023, is destined to play in his home event, the Magical Kenya Open either via the DP World Tour or the Sunshine Tour.

“Winning the Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit feels like a real statement and a reward for the work I have put in. It gives me confidence and motivation for what lies ahead’’ said Kibugu after his triumph in the final leg of the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing at Karen Country Club on Tuesday, where he shot an excellent 14 under par 196.

Kibugu, who won four of the 10 legs of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing that involved the top players in the region, said he was looking forward to the South African tour because it is the opportunity he has been waiting for to climb up the ladder in the world rankings.

He won at the Thika Greens Golf Resort, Nyali, Vet Lab Sports and Karen. His worst performance was a fifth place finish at the Ruiru Sports Club, and a fourth placing at Leisure Lodge.

Opportunities await Kibugu

Many players featuring in the Sunshine Tour usually target a place in the DP World Tour or other world tours.

Professional golf tours, like the PGA Tour, co-sanction events with the DP World Tour through strategic alliances, creating shared tournaments.

This offers an opportunity for players excelling in the Sunshine Tour to get invited to the elite DP World Tour as well as the Asian Tour.

Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent, currently ranked 151 in the World, is the best ranked player in the African continent outside South Africa. He is ranked higher than South African Jacques Kruyswijk, who won the Magical Kenya Open in 2025 at Muthaiga.

Jaacques, a product of the Sunshine Tour, has been playing in Europe and America, while Scott Vincent, also a product of the Sunshine Tour, has been playing in Asia where he won six events.

South Africa has six players ranked top 100 in the world, with Jayden Schape sitting at position 59.

Those are the many opportunities that await Kibugu in South Africa. He has every chance of following the footsteps of the many South Africans who found their way to world majors through the Sunshine Tour.

Having gone to school in South Africa and played in many events there as a junior, Kibugu is focused and has the will and ability to perform well. His strength in the game is on the green (putting), hence the high number of birdies he routinely records.

Kibugu topped the Sunshine Development Tour order of merit with 1,497.23 points, followed by Rwanda’s Celestine Nsanzuwera with 1,317.49 points and veteran Dismas Indiza a distant third with 753.05 points

For his tour troubles, Kibugu walked away with a tidy Sh2.43 million in prize money.

He is currently under the sponsorship of NCBA Bank, particularly in the PGK Equator Tour, whose focus is to produce players who will participate in the Magical Kenya Open.

A cut in this year’s Magical Kenya Open will be a big boost for Kibugu as he prepares for his journey to South Africa for the Sunshine Tour.

Other Kenyan pros who have played in the Sunshine Tour before are Indiza, Anil Shah and Jacob Okello.

Kibugu says his dream is to eventually play in the PGA Tour of America. Now that would make him the undisputed best professional player Kenya has ever produced.
