Hosts Kenya yesterday secured their first win in women’s volleyball at the ongoing 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, defeating Rwanda 3-0 at Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.
The Kenyan team, coached by Gideon Chenje, won the sets 25-21, 25-15, and 25-18, cheered on by home supporters, including legislators from the National Assembly and Senate.
The victory followed Kenya’s opening 3-0 loss to defending champions Uganda on Sunday at the same venue. A key factor in Kenya’s triumph over Rwanda was the return of critical players Senator Joyce Korir and MP Pauline Lenguris, who had missed the previous match.
Coach Chenje credited the win to improved teamwork and the presence of his full squad. “As you can see, today we had all the units functioning. We also talked in training and emphasized the importance of being united throughout the match,” said Chenje.
“This win was important because we needed to be on the same level with other teams. It has motivated us to give our best.”
Kenya, captained by Nyandarua Women Representative Faith Gitau, will next face Burundi as they aim to finish in a strong position.
In the men’s volleyball competition earlier in the day, Rwanda defeated Tanzania 3-1, with captain Muhakwa Valens commending Tanzania’s improvement from last year.
“The Tanzanians surprised us, but we now shift focus to our match against Kenya. We wish to win against our hosts,” said Valens.
