What you need to know:

  • Blak Blad rallied from behind 10-6 at the break to stun two-time champions Nakuru RFC 21-10 at the Nakuru Athletics Club.
  • Strathmore, defending champions Kabras Sugar, Menengai Oilers, KCB and Kenya Harlequin maintained their unbeaten run.

Rank outsiders Blak Blad from Kenyatta University, and Strathmore University Leos claimed shocking victories as the Kenya Cup entered the second round across the country on Saturday.

Fly-half Enock Oduor slotted in three penalties and a conversion, as Blak Blad rallied from behind 10-6 at the break to stun two-time champions Nakuru RFC 21-10 at the Nakuru Athletics Club.

Oduor started by scoring two penalties even as Blak Blad trailed 10-6 at the break, then  fullback Elvis Otete and Bryson Ogamba touched down tries of their own.

Oduor converted one penalty, and curled over another to hand over Blak Blad famous victory, marking what promises to be a great recovery from their slim 32-20 loss to Strathmore Leos on November 22.

“We learnt our lessons from the loss to Strathmore. For sure we should have won that match. We must improve our match management when scores are close,” said Blak Blad skipper Rotich Kibet.

Kibet emphasised the need for his team to pick points from every victory or defeat, adding that the points will be vital later.

A minute of silence was marked before the match following the death of former Nakuru RFC and Kisumu RFC forward Charles “Obako” Odhiambo.

Buoyed by their victory against Blak Blad a week ago, home team Strathmore Leos stopped 17-time champions Nondescripts 32-20 at Madaraka grounds in Nairobi.

Strathmore, defending champions Kabras Sugar, Menengai Oilers, KCB and Kenya Harlequin maintained their unbeaten run on the second week of the competition.

KCB tamed Kisumu RFC 41-10 in Kisumu on Saturday a week after they beat Impala 82-0.

Meanwhile, Kabras Sugar beat newbies Daystar University Falcons 58-0 in Lukenya.

Menengai Oilers were also on a roll, crushing a hapless Impala 97-6 at the Impala Sports Club in Nairobi. Harlequin also made it two wins in a row, beating Masinde Muliro University of Agriculture and technology (Mmust)24-13 in the early kick-off at Impala ground.

KCB, Kabras and Menengai Oilers stayed at the top of the 12-team standings table  with 10 points each, and are followed by Quins and Strathmore Leos  who are on nine points each.
