Long Shakahola cult jail terms apt warning
The sentencing to 200 years in jail of a religious cult leader who ordered his followers to starve themselves to death is an emphatic denunciation of the horrendous crime.
The long prison sentence handed down to doomsday cult leader Paul Mackenzie marks a key stage in getting over the Shakahola Forest starvation tragedy in Kilifi County. The High Court ruling in Mombasa reflects the enormity of the atrocities committed.
This also indicts the coastal region's security agencies, especially the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, which literally slept on the job.
The victims were members of Mackenzie’s so-called Good News International Church. He was found guilty of the murder of 190 children and one adult between January 2021 and September 2023. The High Court imposed two separate 100-year terms, distinguishing victims who died of starvation and those who were killed through suffocation, strangulation, or blunt force trauma.
The sentences will run consecutively, totalling 200 years, meaning that he will stay in jail for the rest of his life. Mackenzie’s co-accused were sentenced to prison terms between 10 and 160 years depending on their level of participation and culpability.
It is hard to imagine that this went on for several years, with the security personnel either unaware or ignoring signs of the blatant abuse.
Cult followers were ordered to isolate and starve themselves and their children to death in preparation to "meet Jesus (Christ) before the end of the world”. Armed guards physically beat or restrained followers and their children who tried to escape or eat.
Mackenzie organised what Judge Diana Kavedza described as "cold and calculated" killings. And this was not all. More than 400 bodies were recovered from mass graves, making this one of the worst modern cult-related disasters.
Preventing another tragedy like the Shakahola massacre will require enhancing intelligence collection and addressing the legal gaps to boost public safety.
