When a leader forgets the weight of their words, they become a liability to the people they serve. Senator Karen Nyamu’s recent conduct in the Senate, where she directed sexualized innuendos at a 15-year-old Grade 10 student, was not a minor slip of the tongue.
It was a profound violation of the dignity of the Kenyan child and a signal of deep moral rot within our leadership. In a country currently haunted by the disappearances, defilement, and murders of its youth, such behaviour is an act of betrayal.
Nyamu has proven she lacks the sobriety required to lead. For this reason, an apology is insufficient. To restore the integrity of the Senate and honour the families grieving across this nation, she must resign.
To understand why Nyamu’s "jokes" are so destructive, one must look at the reality of the streets she is disconnected from. While she uses the Senate floor to satisfy a need for social media notoriety, Kenyan families are enduring a nightmare of unprecedented scale.
Only weeks ago, in March 2026, the nation stood in horror as a mass grave was uncovered in Kericho. Within that site, investigators found the remains of 32 people — the vast majority of whom were children. Twenty-five children, including infants, were found stacked in gunny bags. These were children who had names, who had futures, and whose lives were snuffed out by a predator’s hands. When a Senator treats a visiting student as a sexual punchline, she spits on the memory of those 25 children in Kericho.
Kidnappers demanded a ransom
The tragedy is not limited to Kericho. In April 2026, a 7-year-old boy in Kisaju, Kajiado, was abducted while his mother was at work. His kidnappers demanded a ransom of only Sh4,500. Because his family could not pay, his life was ended. His body was found dumped in a sack near a road. This is the brutal, terrifying reality for Kenyan parents. We are living in a country where a child’s life is valued at less than a politician’s lunch, yet a sitting Senator thinks the Senate floor is a place for sexual "banter" involving minors.
The case of Keziah, the young girl from Kilifi, remains a painful wound in the national conscience. Her disappearance followed a pattern we have seen too often: a normal day, a child who doesn't come home, and a search that ends in the discovery of a body. Her story is a testament to the fact that no corner of this country is currently safe.
When Keziah’s community looked for leadership, they looked for people who would demand better police response times and harsher penalties for predators. They did not look for leaders who would stand in Parliament and make light of the sexualisation of children.
Leadership is about setting the tone for the nation. When a Senator, a woman in a position of power sexualizes a 15-year-old girl in an official proceeding, she is reinforcing the very "grooming" culture that fuels our child safety crisis. She is telling every predator in Kenya that if a Senator can speak this way in public, then they can act this way in private.
Nyamu’s "reluctant" apology, which she was forced to read after public outcry, was a hollow gesture. It was the apology of someone caught, not someone who understands the gravity of her offense. By the time Nyamu was done with her remarks, the damage to the Senate’s dignity was complete. She turned a house of law into a place of harassment.
Kenya is currently facing a surge in homicides and disappearances. The National Crime Research Centre and bodies like the DCI have recorded over 1,000 homicides in a single year, with children and youth being disproportionately targeted. This is a time for urgent, sombre leadership. It is a time for lawmakers who will fight for forensic funding, child protection services, and the rights of the vulnerable.
Karen Nyamu is the opposite of that leader. She is the embodiment of a celebrity culture that has infected our politics, a culture that values "vibes" and "clout" over the survival of our citizens.
If a teacher in that student's school had made those same remarks, they would be arrested and struck from the teaching register. If a civil servant had done it, they would be fired. There is no reason why a Nominated Senator should be shielded from the same accountability. Her presence in the Senate is an insult to the mothers of Kericho, the families in Kajiado, and every Kenyan who has ever had to report a child missing.
