Start up, Ofelos Limited, is working to secure a pie of the health-conscious consumer market through its sugar free cookies.

Established in Nairobi in 2021, the business runs an innovative bakery, a new entrant in the food sector, and a source of hope for the millions affected by sugar-linked conditions such as diabetes.

“The business was created to meet the need for diabetic-friendly treats that are both delicious and health-conscious,” co-founder Gerassimos Fourlanos said. His partner in the business is Mihai Ignat.

Mr Fourlanos, says that the cookies target consumers with diabetes or pre-diabetes, as well as those managing other medical conditions that require careful monitoring of blood sugar levels. Over 10 years ago, he began experimenting with recipes for cookies, breads, jams, and other products using ingredients with low glycemic loads and indices, initially for his consumption and then sharing with friends. Through extensive trial and error and refining various recipes, he has now developed a range of products that not only cater to his dietary needs but also have the potential to form the foundation of a commercial venture serving the diabetic community.

The company’s mission is to empower individuals with diabetes to enjoy sweet treats without fear, transforming their dietary limitations into a source of delight. The business, like many innovative ones, faces several challenges. One significant hurdle is educating customers about what constitutes a suitable diet for diabetes management. To address this, the bakery collaborates with nutritionists and hosts tasting events to educate customers on the benefits and ingredients of their products.

Another challenge is meeting the increasing demand for their products. As awareness of the brand grows, so does the need to scale production while maintaining high quality. The company is actively addressing this by optimising its processes and expanding its production capacity.

The idea behind the company was to create high-quality, diabetic-friendly treats that do not compromise on taste. By focusing on this niche market, it has established itself as a leader in the field of diabetic-friendly products.

“By continuously innovating and expanding our product line, we have managed to stay ahead in a competitive market, ensuring that our offerings are both varied and aligned with customer needs,” he explains.

The business aims to expand its reach beyond Kenya, targeting markets across Africa, Europe, and Asia. This expansion is not just about increasing market share but about making a meaningful impact on the lives of people with diabetes worldwide.

The company also plans to continue innovating, with upcoming product launches including new flavours and additional offerings like crackers and jams. The vision is to partner with diabetic and health organisations to raise awareness and improve education about diabetes management.

Approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards, the company’s clientele includes individuals with diabetes and those who prioritise healthy living. The diverse range of products appeals to a broad audience, including followers of ketogenic diets and individuals seeking gluten-free options.

“We have stood out in a competitive market by offering unique flavours and high-quality ingredients, focusing on the niche of diabetic-friendly treats. This specialisation, along with ongoing improvements and strategic partnerships, has helped us build a strong industry reputation,” he says.

The bakery places a strong emphasis on the procurement of raw materials, collaborating exclusively with trusted, certified suppliers to ensure the highest quality ingredients. Each ingredient undergoes meticulous inspection and rigorous testing in their laboratory to verify authenticity.

Once the quality of the ingredients is confirmed, the bakery’s skilled team proceeds with meticulous care in the kitchen, where every product is baked with dedication. Each item is handcrafted with a focus on hygiene and safety during packaging. The bakery considers packaging a critical aspect of the overall experience, ensuring it is both secure and aesthetically pleasing.

After packaging, the bakery distributes its products to chosen outlets.

The bakery, situated at Highway Mall in Nairobi, operates with a core team of six employees and occasionally outsources additional services. It offers three types of cookies—Coconut & Cacao Nibs, Cardamom, and Spicy Sesame, available at various outlets including Greenspoon, Healthy U, Onn The Way Supermarket, Goodlife Pharmacy, Reliant Pharmacy, and Diabetes Management & Medical Centre.

The pricing is set at Sh698 per pack. Fourlanos explains that the company is not just about selling treats; it’s about making a meaningful difference in society. By providing delicious, diabetic-friendly options, the company helps improve the dietary choices available to individuals with diabetes. This, in turn, promotes a healthier lifestyle and reduces the negative impact of the disease on daily life.

He observes that diabetes rates in Kenya are increasing due to demographic and social changes such as urbanisation, an aging population, and the adoption of unhealthy lifestyles.

With plans for global expansion, continued innovation, and a commitment to education and awareness, the company is self-assured to make a significant impact on the world of diabetic-friendly products.

“Our dedication to improving the lives of those with diabetes, combined with our passion for quality and innovation, ensures that we will remain at the forefront of this vital industry,” he concludes.
