When police signaller Marjori Bosibori returned from a short break at her home in Birongo, Kisii County, on Tuesday, nothing about her suggested she would never leave Kisii Central Police Station alive.
She resumed duty at a supermarket in Kisii town, chatted with colleagues and even shared lunch with them. To those who worked alongside her, she appeared calm, composed and ready to get back to work.
Less than 24 hours later, the 42-year-old officer was found dead inside the station's communication room with a single gunshot wound to her chest and an AK-47 rifle lying beside her.
Her sudden death has stunned colleagues and relatives, leaving investigators searching for answers.
“She seemed her usual self when she reported back to work. I never suspected anything. I still cannot believe it," said a colleague who shared lunch with her on Monday.

Another officer described Bosibori as quiet and reserved and someone who rarely discussed her personal life, making it difficult to know when something was troubling her.
Away from work, friends remember her as a devoted Manchester United supporter.
Suspected suicide
Police are investigating the possibility that she died by suicide, although detectives say they are yet to establish what may have happened in her final hours.
According to Kisii Central sub-County Police Commander Musa Imamai, Bosibori had completed her assignment at a supermarket in Kisii town before returning to the station shortly after midnight with a colleague.
After arriving, she excused herself, saying she wanted to use the washroom.
Her colleague thought nothing of it.
Instead, investigators say, she entered the communication room, a secure office rarely used at that hour, locked the door from inside and never emerged.
It was not until Tuesday morning when another officer reported for duty that something appeared unusual as the communication room remained locked.
After repeated attempts to open the door failed, officers forced it open.
Inside, they found Bosibori seated on a chair, motionless, with a gunshot wound to her chest. An AK-47 rifle lay on the floor beside her.
“We found her body in a sitting position with blood oozing from the gunshot wound. Preliminary findings indicate she sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest, with the bullet exiting through her back,” Mr Imamai said.

Police recovered the rifle, one spent cartridge, a magazine loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition, the office key, three mobile phones and assorted medication.
Ms Bosibori was still dressed in her police jungle uniform.
Mr Imamai described her as one of the few officers trusted to work in the station's communication room because of her professionalism and discipline.
“This is a sensitive office and only a few officers are assigned there. Bosibori was one of those trusted officers,” he said.
He added that investigators are examining every aspect of her life, including whether any family or personal issues may have contributed to the tragedy.
“So far, we have no clues as to what may have led to her reported suicide,” he said.
Her body was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination is expected to provide further answers.
