Eastleigh building collapse: Rescuers dig through rubble in search of survivors

A building has collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Several people are feared trapped under the rubble.

The collapsed structure is located along Yusuf Haji Avenue, next to Day to Day Supermarket on 9th Street.

Kenya Red Cross response teams are at the scene.

"We urge the public to keep clear of the area to allow emergency teams to work safely," Kenya Red Cross said.

Nairobi City County emergency response teams are also at the scene.

"Machinery has been deployed to support debris removal and facilitate access to potential victims. The Relief Officer has been notified, and efforts to mobilise additional resources are ongoing," a statement from the county government said.

Police lob tear gas

According to Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamed, police lobbed tear gas to disperse curious onlookers and make way for rescuers, as well as prevent looting of nearby shops.

Some youths were reportedly targeting scrap metal from the rubble.

“Emergency crews are on site as efforts continue to search for survivors,” he told the Nation.

Mr Mohamed added that more police officers have been deployed to the scene to help coordinate emergency response teams and support rescue efforts.
