Seven people killed in Mai Mahiu-Narok road accident

Seven people died following a head-on collision between two vehicles on the Narok-Mai Mahiu highway on Saturday evening.
The victims were travelling in a minivan from Nairobi towards Narok town when their vehicle collided head-on with a truck in the Nairegia area.
The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Narok County Referral Hospital for treatment following the incident, which occurred at around 6.30pm.
The collision involved a Toyota Voxy travelling towards Narok from Mai Mahiu, and a Mercedes Axor trailer, travelling in the opposite direction.
A police report seen by the Nation indicated that the driver of the Mercedez truck lost control of the vehicle and collided head on with the Toyota Voxy killing all the six passengers and the driver on the spot.
Police further stated that the bodies of the victims were taken to the Narok County Hospital mortuary for preservation, ahead of viewing and identification by relatives.
The Toyota Voxy was left a mangled wreck, as was the truck's cabin. The truck veered off the road and hit trees, uprooting at least three of them in the process, before landing in a ditch.

At press time, police were coordinating efforts to retrieve the wreckages after the vehicles veered off the road as a result of the impact, in preparation for towing to the local police station.
The accident and rescue efforts disrupted traffic flow along the Narok-Mai Mahiu highway causing long queues among motorists on both sides of the highway which is usually busy during weekends as people return to their various workplaces following the Saturday and Sunday break.
