The rapper Khaligraph Jones says he is still waiting for a public apology from the veteran DJ Pinye, whom he accuses of ruining the careers of countless aspiring musicians during his time as a powerful tastemaker in the industry.
For years, artistes have openly blamed DJ Pinye for crashing their musical ambitions, and Khaligraph has never been shy about voicing his displeasure.
At the height of his influence on the hugely popular music TV show The Beat, Pinye was often painted as a ruthless gatekeeper, one who held careers in his hands and, critics say, squeezed a little too hard.
While Khaligraph has since buried his personal feud with Pinye, which famously included jabs at his rap accent and style, he insists the larger issue remains unresolved.
In his view, this is no longer about ego or old beefs, but about accountability to an industry that bled quietly because of DJ Pinye’s barbaric actions.
“At this point, I don’t harbour any bitterness toward him. With growth comes maturity, and if anything, I still made it. But I strongly feel he owes the industry an apology. DJ Pinye was out of line. I personally know so many artistes who gave up on their dreams because of that guy.”
At the time, securing a spot on The Beat was the ultimate goal for any aspiring musician. The show offered unparalleled exposure, and a single appearance could launch a career overnight. But first, a song had to pass DJ Pinye’s judgment, a hurdle that many never cleared.
Numerous artistes claim their songs and videos were dismissed without fair consideration, arguing that the self-styled music critic had no moral authority to decide who deserved a chance and who did not.
Some felt his gatekeeping crossed the line into selfishness, denying audiences the opportunity to judge the music for themselves.
The 54-year-old DJ Pinye has previously remained unapologetic, maintaining that he stood by the standards and values he believed were necessary to protect and grow Kenya’s music industry.
Khaligraph Jones, DNA, and DJ Stylez are among the notable names who have publicly called him out over the years. They are just a few of the artists who endured DJ Pinye’s wrath and still went on to carve out successful musical careers.
