Abducted, assaulted and left for dead: Ex-health official links it to Isiolo governor

Former Isiolo County Chief Officer of Health Mohamed Abdirahman has described a harrowing ordeal in which he was allegedly abducted, assaulted and left for dead, claiming the attack was orchestrated by Isiolo Governor Ibrahim Abdi Guyo.
Mr Abdirahman told journalists that the violence erupted after he refused to renew his contract as chief officer for Health, citing a toxic working environment and what he described as sabotage by the governor.
“As a mother dies in labour because of lack of nearby health facilities and no ambulance, I am the one receiving all that information. It was emotionally draining. I could not continue working under such circumstances,” he said.
According to Mr Abdirahman, he was forcibly disarmed, bundled into a vehicle in the Maanzoni area in Machakos County on June 13 and abducted by individuals allegedly hired by Governor Guyo.
He says the abductors took him to Ruaka where he was then blindfolded, beaten and interrogated about his role in supporting the governor’s impeachment.
“They thought I was dead. The governor asked why I wanted to impeach him. The people in the vehicle questioned me about who was financing the impeachment and warned me it would not succeed because they intended to kill me,” Mr Abdirahman recounted.

The incident has been investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and last Friday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) issued arrest orders for Governor Guyo and seven others over alleged involvement in robbery with violence connected to the attack.
The governor, however, has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
Speaking at a fundraising event at P.C.E.A Shalom Church in Nairobi on Sunday, Mr Guyo denied ordering the abduction, insisting that any attempts to remove him from office must occur through democratic processes.
“Whatever is happening does not give me sleepless nights. Those politicians behind this should go to the people of Isiolo and seek office legitimately. There is no shortcut,” he said.
Governor Guyo added that he is ready to comply with investigative authorities, but until the case is resolved, he continues to enjoy protection from his security detail.
The governor survived an impeachment motion when the Senate dismissed the case, citing procedural errors by the Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
He claims the abduction allegations are false and that the case will be challenged in court. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 23, 2025.
Meanwhile, Abdirahman said he remains focused on cooperating with investigative authorities and ensuring that justice is served.
“As a victim of crime, what matters is where I am today. The past is just a story. We have given the police all the materials needed. The DCI did a good job, which informed the DPP’s decision to charge those responsible. I expect nothing less,” he said.
