What you need to know:

  • The Deputy President urged Kenyans to safeguard peace as he promised more jobs for the youth.
  • Mr Mudavadi asked leaders to tame their tongues to avoid plunging the nation into violence.

President William Ruto's troops on Saturday camped in Kajiado County on the second day of whirlwind tours led by the second and third senior-most leaders in the Kenya Kwanza administration, signalling their 2027 vote hunt plan.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi addressed two key economic empowerment functions in two constituencies of the expansive Kajiado County, a day after they held similar rallies in Kakamega County on Friday.

The presence of the duo in the vote-rich cosmopolitan county, backed by President Ruto's personal assistant Farouk Kibet, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, and a host of Kenya Kwanza Alliance MPs led by National Assembly leader Kimani Ichung’wah, signified a political inroads roadmap for a county previously dominated by the opposition.

State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito was also out to drum up support for the President, but in a separate function, as local UDA grassroots stalwarts also conspicuously stood out.

While Prof Kindiki urged Kenyans to safeguard peace as he promised more jobs for the youth, Mr Mudavadi cautioned leaders to tame their tongues to avoid plunging the nation into a 2027 post-election crisis and violence as was witnessed in 2007.

"The Kenya Kwanza administration is focused on fulfilling the campaign pledges. Kenyans now know who is propagating hatred and violence. For the prosperity of our country, we must shun violence and tribalism," said DP Kindiki.

He further reiterated President Ruto's administration's commitment to creating jobs for the youth countrywide. He said the state remains steadfast in creating jobs through affordable housing projects, foreign jobs dubbed Kazi Majuu, and the ambitious Kazi Mtaani program to be rolled out later in the month.

"We have created at least 320,000 jobs through the affordable housing projects, including jobs made available in retail markets construction nationwide. More opportunities will be created through the ongoing Jitume laboratories. We want youth to tap into the digital space," said Prof Kindiki.

He added: “We have created a further 400,000 abroad jobs for our youths. We will be rolling out 200,000 job openings for youth later this month through the Kazi Mtaani program. Youth remain a major facet in the country's economic stability."

Mr Mudavadi urged the political class, from both sides, to stop beating the war drums ahead of the 2027 polls which might plunge the nation into chaos.

"The scars of 2007 are still fresh. I challenge all leaders bearing an honourable title to shun incendiary utterances. Let us be cautious; peace is precious for any nation," said CS Musalia.

In a reconciliatory tone, CS Musalia emphasized respect for the rule of law, saying the stability of a nation is anchored on the rule of law being indiscriminately respected by all citizens of a sovereign country.

"I urge all Kenyans to unite in building credible independent institutions, including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and Judiciary. A credible IEBC in the 2027 poll will yield results acceptable to both winners and losers," he added.

Defence CS Soipan Tuya urged Kenyans not to be divided along tribal lines but to promote longstanding intercommunity co-existence, terming peace and tranquility as key components towards achieving the development agenda.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah slammed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, currently on a USA tour, for fuelling animosity by blaming the Kenya Kwanza administration for instigating the recent youth violence and destruction of property that left scores dead.

"I heard the former DP saying while in the USA that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki sponsored the recent violence witnessed especially in Mt Kenya. If he has evidence, let him make that report to our security agencies for decisive action. No one is above the law," said the Majority Leader, extending an olive branch to Kajiado Kenya Kwanza sitting MPs allied to Mr Gachagua’s DCP camp.

Another President Ruto ally, Belgut MP Nelson Koech, who serves as the National Assembly Committee on Defence chairperson, insinuated, without divulging much, that the former DP Rigathi Gachagua might face the full wrath of the law in connection to the recent youth violence.
