What you need to know:

  • Dr Omollo said political groups should not force the President to seal coalition deals ahead of the polls.
  • His remarks come as ODM leaders insist on a formal power-sharing deal before next year's election.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has cautioned politicians against imposing pre-election coalition conditions or demanding formal power-sharing agreements from President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

While ODM leaders push for a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement and the Deputy Presidency, Dr Omollo urged voters to evaluate the President based on his development record instead.

Dr Omollo said political groups should not force the President to sign papers to seal coalition deals ahead of the polls.

His remarks come as ODM leaders insist on a formal power-sharing deal before the next election, with some pushing for the Deputy President seat to be reserved for ODM under a broad-based arrangement.

Officials from the two political formations are said to be negotiating a pre-election coalition and 50-50 power-sharing framework ahead of the 2027 General Election.

ODM Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati, Chairperson Gladys Wanga, Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo (Busia Woman Representative), Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and other leaders have maintained that parties such as ODM would safeguard their strongholds through strong grassroots support to secure the highest numbers of governors, senators, MPs and MCAs.

Ms Wanga said ODM had settled after navigating uncharted waters following Mr Raila Odinga's death.

"It is normal to experience the turbulence we had. We have now settled, and we have realised that the vast majority of our people are still intact in the party. Don't be threatened and forced to leave the party. With my spot check across the country, the broad-based team will form the next government, and it will be a 50-50 government between ODM and UDA. We will also have 50-50 negotiations: UDA takes the President, and ODM will take the Deputy President," Ms Wanga explained.

The governor said ODM would have to win a convincing number of elective seats to be assured of 50-50 negotiations for top government jobs, including 10 ministerial positions, with Turkana retaining the Cabinet Secretary position given to Beatrice Askul by the late Mr Odinga as one of the party's strongholds.

"We are building alliances, aligning priorities and establishing joint strategies with grassroots leaders and delegates to secure a clean sweep for ODM in Turkana County in next year's elections, alongside a strong performance for the Broad-Based Coalition," Ms Wanga said during a meeting in Turkana.

But Dr Omollo said the lake region should support the President unconditionally and told off leaders from the region who want President Ruto to sign an agreement with the community to support his re-election bid.

Speaking during a meeting with livestock traders and sugarcane farmers, the PS said Luo Nyanza counties will support President Ruto's re-election in 2027 without any conditions.

According to the Interior PS, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in his quest for the presidency, would often be subjected to signing deals with different communities to show commitment to supporting particular groups after the polls.

"The President has worked for the people and he will continue to deliver. We must not put conditions for him. He has delivered for the whole country in equal measure," the PS said.

He noted that the Head of State has initiated various development projects which have transformed many lives in the region, and assured residents of Nyanza that all projects including road construction being undertaken in the region will be completed before the next General Election.

"It would be shameful if the Luo community gives a condition to the President that he must fulfil something. His re-election should be unconditional," Dr Omollo said.

He said Kenyans should decide for themselves what the President has done in terms of development and vote for him without giving conditions, adding that the Head of State will decide who he rewards after the election.

"We should all rally behind the President. Anyone who wants him to commit to pre-election deals will find us supporting him," Dr Omollo said.

He also strongly defended President Ruto's agricultural track record, crediting state interventions for boosting local farming.

Speaking on the administration's impact, Dr Omollo highlighted the national fertiliser subsidy program, noting that prices have plummeted from Sh7,000 to Sh2,000 per bag. He said that the reduction has maximised crop yields and increased profit margins for farmers across the country.

Turning to the sugar industry, the PS noted that the sector is undergoing a major transformation, with factory workers and farmers finally being paid on time after President Ruto cleared historical debts owed to suppliers.

Dr Omollo added that the government is also scaling up livestock support  focusing on mass vaccination campaigns to safeguard animal health, boost meat exports and drive value addition.
