What you need to know:
- Dr Ruto described the spouse of late Raila Odinga as a distinguished educationist, pro-democracy and gender equity champion.
- The presidency said her appointment is expected to amplify Kenya's voice on environmental issues and further reinforce the country's longstanding leadership in environmental diplomacy.
President William Ruto has nominated Canon Ida Betty Odinga, the widow of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep).
In a press release issued Friday by the Executive Office of the President, the Head of State said he had formally transmitted the nomination to the National Assembly for vetting and approval.
" In exercise of the prerogative vested in the Head of State and government, caused the nomination of Canon Betty Ida Odinga for appointment as Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to Unep," read the presidential nomination.
It comes barely three months after the death of Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025, closing a historic chapter in Kenyan opposition politics while reopening questions about rapprochement between the Odinga family and the Ruto Administration.
Ms Odinga, popularly known as Mama Ida, is described in the presidential instrument as a distinguished educationist, civic leader, and an acclaimed advocate for social justice and gender equity, with a career spanning teaching, civil society leadership and private enterprise.
She began her professional journey as a graduate teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi, and later at Kenya High School where the statement notes that her years in the classroom “nurtured a deep-rooted and enduring commitment to education, inspiring and guiding successive generations of future leaders.”
The credentials, State House said, also situate her firmly within the political history in the country, describing her as “the lifelong companion of the former Prime Minister, the Right Hon Raila Amolo Odinga, CGH, until his demise on October 15, 2025”.
“In the early 1990s, amid the national clamour to transition from a single-party State to a multiparty democracy, she played a key role in advancing calls for change and democratic reform as the founding Chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters,” the statement reads.
Her nomination also places her at the centre of country’s long-standing effort to project influence within Unep, the UN’s principal environmental authority, headquartered in Nairobi.
The presidency said her appointment is expected to amplify Kenya's voice on environmental issues and further reinforce the country's longstanding leadership in environmental diplomacy, as well as its pivotal role as host of the UN's principal environmental authority.
Mama Ida has previously served on boards of family-linked enterprises, including East African Spectre, a liquefied gas cylinder manufacturing company, and has received multiple honours, among them Kenya’s highest civilian award, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), conferred in 2018.
If confirmed, she will assume a role that blends diplomacy, climate politics and symbolism, representing Kenya at Unep while embodying a political lineage that has shaped the country’s post-independence history.
