Only three points separate the top three teams as the 2026/27 Football Kenya Federation Premier League season heads towards its final round of fixtures before the international break.

The race for the Golden Boot is also hotting up, with the leading contenders finding the back of the net consistently.

Defending champions Gor Mahia are top of the table with 12 points, followed by KCB with 10 points. AFC Leopards are in third place with nine points as they seek their first league title since 1998.

Gor Mahia suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 2–1 to 10-man KCB at Moi Stadium, raising questions about head coach Charles Akonnor's tactics, game management, and team selection.

An elated KCB coach, Robert Matano, said that his team were focused on winning every match and were determined to compete for the title.

"I'm happy that we ended Gor Mahia's winning streak. Our focus now is on maintaining this momentum ahead of our upcoming fixtures," he said.

However, Matano expressed displeasure with defender Baron Oketch, whose reckless challenge earned him a red card.

Akonnor admitted that his team had been sluggish, particularly in defence, and lacked the necessary aggression in attack and defence.

"We were a little sluggish at the back in the early minutes of the game. The goals just came; they didn't create them by going back,” said Akonnor.

"We needed to be more aggressive at the back when we were under pressure, clearing the ball and so on. We didn’t do that, but I think it’s OK. We will go back home and correct our mistakes,” he said.

Gor opened their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Murang'a Seal, followed by narrow 1-0 wins against APS Bomet, Bandari, and Kakamega Homeboyz.

KCB have also suffered one defeat this season. They opened with a 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Mombasa United, followed by a 1-0 win against Mathare United. They also drew 2–2 with Nairobi United before losing 1–0 to Posta Rangers.

AFC Leopards' 2-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz in the Ingoo Derby further boosted their title ambitions. This left Ingwe among the league's unbeaten sides, alongside the newly promoted Migori Youth and Tusker.

Midfielder Emmanuel Lwangu and defender Kayce Odhiambo scored for the Leopards in the match at the Wang'uru Stadium in Kirinyaga.

However, Leopards have struggled to score consistently, being held to goalless draws by Bandari, Shabana and Mara Sugar. Their other victory was a 2-1 triumph over former champions Kenya Police on October 20.

Coach Fred Ambani praised his players' discipline, particularly the contributions of Odhiambo and Lwangu.

"It was great because, with Kayce Odhiambo marshalling the midfield and Lwangu in defence, we knew we posed more of a threat. Lwangu is very dangerous from set pieces, and when the opportunity arose, he seized it. This enabled us to get three points,” said Ambani.

Meanwhile, Murang'a Seals striker Josephat Lopaga is leading the race for the Golden Boot with six goals, while Gor Mahia's Alpha Onyango has scored four.

Majaliwa Charo of Murang'a Seal is in third place with three goals, while several other players have scored one or two goals.

Lopaga has scored twice against Gor Mahia, Posta Rangers and Nairobi United, while Onyango has found the net against Bandari, Murang'a Seal, APS Bomet and KCB.
