Kenya's David Munyua qualifies for PDC World Darts Championship

David Munyua, the veterinary officer from Murang’a County who took the world by storm in 2025 with a sensational run at the Paddy Power (PDC) World Darts Championship, has again qualified to play on the world stage of professional darts.

In December 2025, Munyua took the Paddy Power (PDC) World Darts Championship by storm at the Alexandra Palace in London, United Kingdom. He has again qualified to play in the tournament next year.

Fans were treated to dramatic scenes at the African Dart Group Northern Africa Qualifier on Sunday in Nairobi, as Munyua edged out his compatriot Evans Njuguna 8-7 in the last-leg decider to qualify.

The victory denied Njuguna a ticket to the biggest event in darts.

The 2027 PDC World Darts Championship, a professional darts tournament, is scheduled to take place from December 11, 2026 to January 3, 2027.

The 30-year-old won the opening matches with two effortless victories to reach the quarter-finals, where he put Uganda’s Acidri Isaac Passi to the sword to triumph 5-1.

Munyua then ran through another Ugandan player, Okalany Robert Clegg, 6-0 to set up a semi-final clash with his compatriot Peter Wanjii. The World Championship star got a scare of his life.

Munyua found himself down 3-5 against Wanjii, but he summoned energy and skill to win four legs in quick succession for a 7-5 advantage.

Munyua and Njuguna went blow-to-blow before Njuguna led 7-6, only for Munyua to claw back, holding his nerve to win 8-7 and book his ticket back to Alexandra Palace, popularly known as Ally Pally.

In December 2025, the country witnessed phenomenal occurrences when Munyua became the first Kenyan to qualify and reach the second round of the PDC World Darts Championship in London, earning himself Sh4.3million in the process.

Munyua created a piece of history after he overcame a wasp sting on his right eye as he rallied from behind 2-0 to stun world number 18, Belgian Mark De Becker, 3-2 and advance to the second round. However, his fairytale run ended when he lost to Dutchman Kevin Doets in the second round of the event with prize money of Sh853.

On Sunday, Njuguna had seen off top seed Peter Waichuri 6-5 in the quarter-final and Festus Chepkwony 7-3 in the semi-finals, but Munyua ruined what could have been his maiden appearance at the World Championship.

The Southern Africa Qualifier will be held on November 1, 2026, to give other players from Africa a chance to qualify to join Munyua at Alexandra Palace.

The best performance by an African at the world event is by South Africa’s Devon Petersen, who reached the fourth round in 2019 and 2021.
