Kabras Sugar RFC coach Carlos Katywa is now just five victories away from a phenomenal milestone of 50 consecutive victories in the Kenya Cup.

The South African tactician guided the fearsome Kabras to their, and his, 45th consecutive win in Kenya’s premier club rugby competition, in a 55-8 thrashing of two-time former champions Nakuru RFC at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Saturday.

Katywa, who is on his fourth successive season unbeaten with Kabras, could hit the milestone on March 14 with a home win against Menengai Oilers.

But Kabras will first have to notch up wins against Quins on Saturday, Blak Blad on February 21, Nondies on February 28, and KCB seven days later.

"Our target is to keep on winning when we step on the field, but we stay humble. It’s good to make history in a good way, but in Africa, we don’t count the chicks before the eggs hatch. Our tradition is one match at a go,” said Katywa.

Katywa said it is all about the talented players who were eager to give it their all without focusing on who they are meeting or what record they are chasing.

“I have always told my players to concentrate on building themselves as a good brand in,” said Katywa, adding that players, the team's management, and their sponsors, West Kenya Sugar Company, bought into his philosophy.

"The community in Kakamega has been so supportive, and it's our dream to have every school in the region, both girls and boys, play the game at the highest level. We want Western to be the rugby hub of the country," said Katywa.

Katywa has not lost any Kenya Cup or Enterprise Cup match since taking over from fellow countryman Jerome Muller in 2022.

Katywa has lifted the Kenya Cup trophy three consecutive times and the Enterprise Cup four successive times, unbeaten.

No other coach in the history of Kenya Cup has held a winning streak stretching to four seasons.

Kabras Sugar, the five-time Kenya Cup champions, touched down nine times against the 2013 and 2014 champions on Saturday for a scary total of 74 tries thus far this season as they maintained their position on the league table summit with 30 points.

Kabras Sugar, who have been routinely scoring over half-a-century victories this season, have amassed 458 points thus far this season. They have conceded the fewest points (45), for a point difference of 429.

The points conceded include five tries, three in their 81-21 victory against Strathmore Leos, one against Kisumu whom they beat 74-10 and one in Saturday’s Suguta Valley showdown.

Kabras’ highest score was when they smashed Impala 123-0 at the Kakamega Showground, while their least scoring victory came against Nakuru on Saturday. It was their 14th victory against Wanyore, who have beaten them thrice in history.

Menengai Oilers, who rallied from behind to chalk their sixth consecutive bonus point victory, beating a spirited Kenya Harlequin 22-17 at the RFUEA on Saturday, stayed second in the log with 30 points.

Oilers scored four tries for their total 59 tries this season, which brought their tally to 335 points, having conceded 60 points this season.

KCB, who blanked Blak Blak 45-3 at Kenyatta University ground, are placed third on the log with 29 points.
