When a teenage boy entered the sacred forests of Kapseret in Uasin Gishu County in November 2023 for the cultural circumcision rites, he believed he was following in the footsteps of generations before him, preparing to undergo a rite of passage that would mark his transition into manhood.
Instead, what was meant to be a rite of passage turned into a harrowing experience that would leave emotional and physical scars and expose a dark underbelly of cultural initiation practices.

Posing as a steward of tradition, Amon Kaile, also known by his alias Kurukuru, manipulated the boy into believing that molestation, a violent sexual act, was part of the initiation process.
Between November 21 and 22, 2023, in a span of two days inside the forest near Cheleban village, the boy said his caretaker lured him into isolation and sexually assaulted him twice, claiming the abuse was a traditional step required to become a “real man”.
Part of the court documents, as presented by Senior State Counsel Peter Onjoro, described the harrowing account.
The court heard that Kaile told the boy that this ordeal was normal and that the other initiates had also gone through it. He insisted it was the only way to prove adulthood and be considered ready for marriage.
The boy, confused and in pain, was warned to keep quiet. His caretaker threatened him with supernatural consequences, telling him that revealing the act would invoke attacks from “evil spirits of circumcision ancestors”.
Kaile again isolated the boy under the pretence of collecting firewood. Deeper in the forest, he repeated the assault, this time using protection, according to the court testimony.
Overwhelmed by pain and fear, the boy turned to a neighbour he trusted. He confided in them, asking a haunting question: “Is what happened to me really part of the initiation?”
The neighbour, disturbed by the disclosure, quickly shared the information with other villagers. A community-led manhunt for Kaile followed as he had already gone into hiding. He briefly returned to the forest the next day but when confronted by fellow caregivers and villagers, he fled again.
It didn’t take long for angry residents to track him down. Fearing mob justice, police intervened just in time, arresting him and taking him to Kiambaa Police Station.
The boy was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where doctors confirmed documented injuries consistent with sexual abuse.
In a hearing that lasted less than two years, the prosecution presented four witnesses before Eldoret Senior Principal Magistrate Mogire Onkoba.
Kaile, who did not produce any witnesses in his defence, claimed the accusations were fabricated. He alleged that jealous individuals envious of his reputation as a skilled initiator had tried to force him to join their religion. When he refused, he claimed, they reported him to the police out of spite.
But the evidence, and the victim’s detailed testimony, spoke louder.
Kaile was convicted of defilement contrary to Section 8(1) of the Sexual Offences Act of 2006 after the court established that he had indeed committed the act and had claimed that the sexual assault was part of the traditional initiation process.
He told the victim that “the other initiates had gone through the same process to become real men,” and that enduring it was the only way to be sure of becoming an adult fit for marriage, the court heard.
“Children are protected under the law against any form of exploitation. Noting the penalties provided for under the law, I sentence the accused to serve a jail term of 20 years in imprisonment,” Magistrate Onkoba said in his sentencing remarks.
The case has cast a shadow over what is traditionally seen as a proud cultural rite and the vulnerabilities that exist within these hidden spaces. In many Kenyan communities, circumcision, often conducted in secluded, secretive settings led by older men, marks the critical step from childhood to manhood.
Activists and community leaders say more needs to be done to protect children and young initiates, especially in traditional settings where oversight is limit.
