I'm looking to settle down soon since I'm turning 30. My dad has repeatedly told me that I should find a wife among the younger women who don't have a high body count and with whom we can start from the ground up together. They're more receptive, he says. My friends have also expressed similar sentiments. What do you think?
This is a popular idea that a man should marry a very young woman not only because she is 'cleaner' but because she is easier to mould. She is supposedly innocent, uncontaminated by the world and less likely to challenge his preferences than an older woman who has already lived, explored life and developed strong opinions. But there is one problem with this strategy – she will not remain young forever. What happens when the girl you chose because she was easy to influence eventually becomes a woman who knows herself? Will she still like the life you chose for her? You surely hope she will. But what if she doesn't?
The assumption is that innocence equals good character. But does it? Sometimes innocence simply means lack of exposure. A young woman may not yet have encountered enough of life to know what she likes or dislikes, what kind of marriage she wants or what kind of man she can build a life with. For many people under 25, important decisions about identity, relationships, and career are still under examination. Their choices are often experimental rather than final. That includes dating you.
This creates a potential problem when someone rushes a young woman into permanent commitments before she has had enough time to understand herself. She may agree to marry you. She may sign the papers willingly. She may even love you at the time. But years later, as she develops greater self-awareness, she may discover that the life she entered was not actually the life she would have chosen. By then, however, there may be children and property, financial dependence and an established lifestyle. She cannot simply walk away. She may not be able to afford the lifestyle independently. She may not want to disrupt the children. She may fear the consequences of starting over. So she stays. And that is often where a painful marriage begins.
You end up with a wife who is polite and responsible in the home, yet emotionally distant from you. She fulfills her responsibilities while relating to you more like a provider or authority figure than a man she deeply desired and deliberately chose. You gave her a lifestyle, but she never fully chose you.
She needs you for the life she's living but not for the love she would wish for. The truth is that a woman can have children with you, depend on you financially and live comfortably with you while still feeling emotionally disconnected from you.
Also, the assumption that women above 25 are undesirable because they have already been “run through” is remarkably crude. Not every mature woman has spent her life jumping from one man to another. There are women who have deliberately avoided casual relationships. They have been developing their character and their career in preparation for the kind of marriage they eventually want. Such a woman is often a better prospect because she is choosing from a position of greater self-awareness. She knows what marriage requires.
She understands that marriage involves trade-offs, sexual exclusivity and the decision to build a life with one person. Age alone does not determine character. But choosing someone primarily because she is young is a risky gamble. Women have passionate desires and strong preferences in romance just as men do. A woman can be deeply attracted to a man, indifferent to him or completely repulsed by him. Providing for her does not change that. Neither does giving her children.
You can secure her commitment legally and financially while failing to win her heart. And when that happens, the marriage becomes lonely. She may be passive and polite most of the time, but during disagreements, her suppressed resentment erupts. She becomes defensive and sharp with her words. That is not the marriage you want. There is, of course, one disadvantage to dating a self-aware woman who is older than 25 – you may face more rejection.
This woman knows what she wants. She has stronger preferences. She is more likely to walk away when something does not fit her values or vision. But when she chooses you, that choice carries greater weight because it is informed. This is not an argument that everyone becomes mature at 25 or that every woman above 25 is wise. Age does not automatically produce character.
The point is developmental: as people grow, they generally acquire more experience, self-knowledge and psychological independence. Brain development also continues into the 20s, particularly in areas associated with planning, judgment and impulse control. So choose a woman who knows herself well enough to choose you. You are not looking for someone you can mould. You are looking for someone whose character, values and vision already are aligned with yours so that you can build a life together.
