Brazilian butt lift, commonly referred to as BBL, is gaining popularity in Kenya.
The first few days after a cosmetic procedure are meant to be about healing and results. But for some women, recovering from a Brazilian butt lift, popularly known as BBL, the surprise is not pain or swelling, it is a smell they didn’t expect, and don't know whether to ignore.
Dr Benjamin Wabwire, the head of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital, says it is possible to experience post-surgery odour after a butt surgery, especially after the first week.
This is because there is a lot of fluid that is injected into the body, and the areas where fat was removed will also be hollow. So, the body will produce fluid (serum), which accumulates in those areas, so people have to go for massages to push it out.
“Serum always has a smell. Of course, if the smell is too bad, then it can mean that there's also an underlying infection because infection will cause proteins in that fluid to break down, and most of the time, proteins have some sulphur, so they'll produce some bad smell.”
But having said that, Dr Wabwire says the other reason why you can foul smell is after the fat dies off, which happens after BBL. Moreover, some patients may limit full showers and rely on sponge baths, and compression garments can become damp from sweat or drainage. If garments aren't changed and dried properly, odour can develop.
However, in the long run, Dr Wabwire says after a week or two, the BBL patient should not experience a foul odor.
