The battle for political influence ahead of the 2027 General Election intensifies this weekend as President William Ruto heads to Nyanza while opposition formations fan out to Nairobi and Northern Kenya.
The President begins a five-day tour of Nyanza on Sunday, starting with a church service before meeting about 10,000 leaders drawn from Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori counties.
The tour takes President Ruto into the heart of a region that has historically been associated with the opposition, but where his administration has sought to make inroads through the broad-based government arrangement and a sustained programme of development projects.
At the same time, the United Opposition, led by Wiper Patriotic Front chief Kalonzo Musyoka , will have engagements in Garissa and Tana River counties, while the Linda Mwananchi movement associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, returns to Nairobi for a rally on Sunday.
The competing itineraries offer a glimpse of the calculations taking shape ahead of the General Election, with the government and the opposition seeking to strengthen their presence across regions and voter blocs that could prove decisive in the presidential contest.
For Dr Ruto, the Nyanza tour comes after weeks of extensive travel across the country, including Maa counties, the Coast and the Rift Valley.
The President recently toured Kajiado, following a two-day visit to neighbouring Narok, and made engagements in Taita Taveta.
He then turned his attention to the South Rift, where a four-day tour of Bomet and Kericho counties concludes today.
His South Rift programme has combined project launches and inspections with direct political engagements with residents.
President Ruto’s itinerary in Bomet and Kericho has focused on roads, health, housing, markets, electricity, among other projects.
State House says the President will visit Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori, launching development projects and engaging leaders.
He is also expected to attend a service at the Voice of Salvation and Healing Church in Kisumu and later hold a Cabinet meeting at Kisumu State Lodge.

Across the four counties, the government says it is implementing projects valued at more than Sh220 billion covering roads, housing, markets, health, water and other infrastructure.
Among the projects expected to feature prominently are the Sh1 billion Usenge Pier in Siaya, Muhuru Bay Pier in Migori, the Kabonyo-Kanyagwal aquaculture project in Kisumu and the proposed extension of the standard gauge railway from Naivasha to Kisumu and Malaba.
Local leaders, however, have their own list of demands.
Muhoroni MP, Onyango Koyoo, said he expects the President to address the completion of the Kipsitet-Mamboleo road, construction of the Koru-Soin dam and progress on the leasing of government-owned sugar factories.
Other concerns are completion of the Mamboleo-Miwani-Chemelil road, construction of Moi Stadium and increased funding for Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
For residents, the demands are more immediate – safety on Lake Victoria, prompt payment for cane delivered to millers, jobs and relief from the high cost of living.
He seeks to consolidate the support he has gained from sections of the former opposition establishment following the formation of the broad-based government in 2024, while opponents are warning Nyanza residents against being swayed by projects alone.
Linda Mwananchi leaders have in recent rallies described government projects as “shiny things” and urged Kenyans to demand accountability, good governance, respect for the rule of law and an end to police brutality and abductions.
The movement has spent much of this year traversing the country, with county tours taking it to Busia, Kajiado, Kakamega, Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Vihiga, Kisumu, Machakos, Kiambu, Kisii, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Homa Bay and Meru counties.
Its return to Nairobi will, therefore, be another test of Linda Mwananchi’s ability to translate the county-level mobilisation into a national movement.
The event comes against the backdrop of the deadly violence that disrupted the movement’s rally in Homa Bay and Kisii, raising concerns about whether rival political formations can conduct campaigns without confrontation.
Nairobi Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairman George Aladwa sought to lower the temperature, saying Linda Mwananchi leaders are free to hold rallies and present their agenda to city residents.
He urged ODM supporters to remain calm, saying political competition should be based on ideas and policies instead of confrontation.
“Do not allow yourselves to be provoked into unnecessary confrontations. We have nothing to prove through disrupting other people’s meetings or violence,” the Makadara MP said.
The statement is significant, given the increasingly complicated relationship between ODM figures associated with the broad-based government and politicians pushing the Linda Mwananchi agenda – many of them rebel ODM lawmakers.
As Mr Sifuna and his allies mobilise in Nairobi, Mr Musyoka will be in Northern Kenya from Saturday.
The Wiper leader is to hold a media briefing in Garissa, followed by a meet-the-people tour at Garissa market and a rally at the livestock market.

His team moves to Tana River the following day, where it will attend a church service in Hola before another meet-the-people tour.
The tour, according to planners, is intended to expand the opposition’s presence and demonstrate that its proposed alliance can build a genuinely national campaign.
After opposition leaders held a meeting on ““housekeeping matters”, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the United Alternative Government and Linda Mwananchi are working towards being one team.
“Those of us in the United Alternative Government who are saying one term, those of us in Linda Mwananchi who are saying one term, we are working on becoming one team,” Mr Wamalwa said.
The remarks underline the central challenge facing the opposition – whether competing formations and presidential hopefuls can eventually agree on a single candidate capable of mounting a credible challenge to Dr Ruto.
Mr Musyoka, meanwhile, continues with consultations with other leaders in the opposition.
He hosted Mr Sifuna at his residence in Nairobi on Thursday for talks “on the state of the nation and the road ahead”.
Mr Musyoka said they agreed that opposition leaders must work together to change the country, restore constitutionalism and strengthen democracy.
For Dr Ruto, the Nyanza visit offers another opportunity to sell his record and broaden the political coalition around his administration.
For opposition leaders, the weekend presents an opportunity to demonstrate that their competing formations can mobilise simultaneously in different parts of the country while pursuing the seemingly elusive objective of unity.
As the President addresses leaders and residents of Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori, Mr Musyoka will be in Garissa and Tana River, while Mr Sifuna and his allies seek to draw supporters to Nairobi.
The parallel campaigns underscore how the 2027 contest is already taking shape – with the President criss-crossing the country to consolidate support, while opposition formations build grassroots networks, test their strength and negotiate the terms of a possible united front.
