Over a century of service to the sport never made black football boots noticeable until their absence from the sport’s grandest stage.
The 2026 Fifa World Cup has made pink the new black. Research has shown that pink stands out on green grass, leaving Adidas, Nike, and Puma all looking the same after they supplied their players with pink boots.
The increasing of commercialization football is creating egalitarianism that leaves everyone feeling ashamed. Yet, there was once an era when players felt no shame wearing boots of the same colour.

Attention mattered less then because black boots never begged for it. Black boots were born into a football world established on norms of functionality and practicality. Boots were useful for kicking a football and being made of leather, keeping them black made it easy to clean them and reduce wear and tear after hours of playing with them on muddy or dusty surfaces.
Black boots provided functionality and practicality that made it a standard bearer for football traditions that symbolise an authentic and serious approach to the game. As such, even as football pitches became more pristine, colour television became mainstream, and industrial processes for tanning leather improved, black boots were protected from the clamour for aesthetically pleasing footwear. Wearing any boots other than black was frowned upon and had one labelled as a “weirdo”.

Boots in colour other than black made players stand out on the pitch, even when they were just standing or running without the ball. A player became noticeable without effort. The chromatic silence of black did not tolerate idling on the pitch. Wearing black boots meant putting in a shift and letting your talent do the talking for you.
Pele won three World Cup titles in them. Diego Maradona had them on his feet when he dribbled past six English players in 1986. Zinedine Zidane’s regal elegance did not require accessorising with purple boots. Black boots made industry and work contagious, but the rapid commercialisation of football over the last three decades has birthed a new pandemic – attention.
Before, only one television camera followed the ball and 22 players throughout a game. Right now, live football matches are produced using over 30 cameras, and black boots are now out of the picture because everyone wants to get noticed.
Having a fancy haircut and arms plastered with tattoos is not enough anymore; your feet have to do the talking too, and nothing attracts views and clicks quicker than brightly-coloured boots.
Professional football is burying black boots without giving it a testimonial, having relegated its role to that of conservative or old school wear. Referees are making sure that black boots survive on the football pitch, but you will never see Josephine Wanjiku – the best referee of the 2025/26 FKF Premier League season – swing a curler to the top corner.

The desire for attention has made black boots an unfit agent for brilliance on the football pitch, and their reputation for the sport’s proponent for work ethic is now only exercised at football academies. Black boots, once a hallmark of professionalism in football, are now worn as a rite of passage to remind academy footballers that they have not made it yet.
Black boots gave football what boots of other colours will never replicate – football in its purest form. We remember great players from past World Cups because black boots went about their work in silence. The 2026 Fifa World Cup will not give you those memories. Pink made noise about being the new black.
