Bongo flava singer Harmonize says he has spent the last three years paying various debts totaling Tsh1.08 billion (Sh53 million)
Harmonize was recently forced to move out of his palacious rental house in Dar es Salaam over rent arrears, with the singer saying he was forced to vacate his residence following a disagreement with the landlord over rent. The singer had lived in the house for close to five years.
While admitting that he indeed owed the landlord some arrears, the singer was also candid about how he had to struggle with paying off debts that had accrued to over Sh53 million in recent years.
Some of the huge debts he says he has now cleared during that period were the Tsh600 million that he had to pay, to buy out the remainder of his contract from Wasafi Record Label when he forced his way out in 2019 prematurely. The contract still had at least five more years to its expiry.
Harmonize performs during the Koroga Festival on July 22, 2018 at Two Rivers Mall Nairobi. He has split with his fiancé Fridah Kajala.
Another huge debt he had to offset was Tsh200 million he had borrowed from the CRDB bank, but defaulted, forcing the financial institution to take him to court. In 2024, the court ordered the singer to pay the bank Tsh113 million for the debt that had accrued at the time.
“I have never been afraid of debt; everybody has debts, such is life. I have no loans or any repayment at the moment, and I don't intend to be taking any more credit until I build some financial literacy.’”
Just a few weeks ago, Harmonize also revealed that he had reached an out-of-court settlement with his ex-wife, Italian Sarah Michelotti, paying her 50,000 Euros (Sh7.5 million) to conclude the divorce suit.
Following the divorce, Sarah sued Harmonize, demanding a share of his wealth, arguing that she had hugely contributed to his fortune during the years they were together. Harmonize also says he had to clear a debt of Tsh100 million he owned from an investor by the name Dr Sebastian Denge.
The singer also went further to reveal that he had pumped at least Tsh1 billion into launching his record label, Konde Gang, when he left Wasafi. The investment has yet to make him any returns.
“In three years (since launching the label), I have gained nothing. Absolutely zero,” he added.
