My boyfriend asked me to hide when his mother visited him unannounced. He said he needs time to convince his family because they never liked the idea of me when he shared it. The fact that he can't protect you from his mother and instead hides you is the biggest red flag. Also, wasting a whole year in the same situation without him making up his mind and showing leadership is enough to give you the signal you need. A lot of times, if the in-laws resist you, it is because their son loves you and is better off for marrying you. And when they love you it is often because their son does not deserve you.
When a man marries a woman who strengthens him, stabilises him and raises his standards, some families resent her. They see the change. They see that their son now listens to someone else. The new wife becomes a symbol of that shift. She is the one who “took him away,” even when in truth she only helped him grow up. But the opposite also happens. When a man marries far above what he deserves, everyone notices his good luck. If he was unstable, alcoholic or unable to keep jobs, she makes him stable. She builds him a home and a family.
But he is also stressing her to death and his family knows she may quit at any time. If she is always complaining about his infidelity, emotional absence or financial neglect, they compensate by loving the daughter-in-law a lot so she can stay as his rehabilitation. Never make the mistake of taking in-laws' reactions too personally.
Sometimes they oppose you because you brought a shift of power, or embrace you because you have taken their problem away. What you should realise is that marriage does not just join two individuals; it disrupts an existing system. Every family operates with its own unspoken structures. If you are overly praised, you may overextend yourself trying to maintain that approval, tolerating behaviours you should never normalise. Neither path is healthy.
The key is emotional clarity. You must understand your role in your marriage independent of external opinions. Your primary responsibility is not to win over your in-laws, but to build a functional, respectful and mutually supportive partnership with your spouse. I can't emphasise this enough. Not all criticism from in-laws is malicious, and not all affection is manipulative. The maturity lies in being able to separate genuine concern from control, and appreciation from dependency. Equally important is the role of your partner.
A healthy marriage requires that he takes responsibility for managing his family’s expectations and boundaries. When a spouse fails to do this, it creates space for interference, resentment and misaligned loyalties. No partner should feel like they are competing with in-laws for position or influence.
Ultimately, in-law dynamics are less about being liked or disliked and more about how well boundaries are established and maintained. If you are secure in who you are, clear in your values and aligned with your partner, external factors cannot destabilise you. You stop performing for acceptance and start operating from conviction.

If a man can't protect you now, he won't do it later. The dysfunction you see, combined with his lack of boundaries and decisiveness, will only get worse.
