Caren and Joel have been dating for the last three years, and they have now reached a point where they feel that their relationship should grow to another level. Joel made the arrangements for Caren to visit his rural home and meet his parents. To their surprise, Joel's parents rejected Caren flatly the moment they learned of her tribe.
"We don't marry outside our community," said Joel's dad. "They are in their own political camp, and it has been like that since independence."
"Even if you love each other, it's only a matter of time before reality hits," said Joel's mum. "When election time comes, our community will isolate her, and you'll be at risk too if you want to defend her."
The two lovers were upset. They travelled back to the city and came to the Sexology Clinic to ask for professional advice on how to navigate such difficult terrain.
"We have already told our parents that they are free not to attend the wedding if they feel uncomfortable," Joel explained. "We are beyond that era when people were divided into political factions based on their community of origin."
Different political beliefs
Caren’s parents were not as strict with her about the matter as Joel’s parents, but they warned her to be cautious, as anything could happen depending on how the marriage turned out.
Research studies have been carried out to establish what occurs when partners in an intimate relationship hold different political views. Most of these studies have been conducted in the United States, where people strongly identify with either the Democratic or Republican parties.
Interestingly, the majority of people do not date people who have different political beliefs. People tend to align their social and political values with those of the people they fall in love with. This is why many dating apps now include political affiliation as a criterion for pairing partners.
In fact, a national survey conducted by the American Survey Centre in 2025 found that 73 per cent of single women with a college education would be unlikely to date someone with significantly different political beliefs.
Another study by Ahler et al. in 2024 found that people are more likely to reach out to and pursue partners who share their political identity.
Therefore, it seems that different political opinions act as a deterrent from the outset and prevent people from falling in love.
Align your political views
But what about those who are already in love, or even married? What happens when they develop different political views during the course of their marriage?
Interestingly, studies show that most people can tolerate each other to a certain extent, especially if other aspects of the marriage are functioning well. The problem arises, however, when one or both of the individuals involved have significant social influence. If they are a politician or hold a position that influences people's thinking and behaviour on social matters, research shows that they are likely to experience high relationship dissatisfaction, which can lead to conflict, separation and even divorce if their political views differ from their partner's.
Furthermore, social contacts can cause significant problems for the couple. Even if there is peace in the marriage, social contacts tend to impose their influence on it, and if one partner is not strong enough to protect the other, they can be swayed and turn against the person they love. The strong ones, on the other hand, are excluded from major community decisions.
"Well taken," said Joel. "This analysis helps us to understand how to nurture our love. It's a shame that politics can interfere with love and intimacy."
If you are in a long-term relationship, be aware of your differing political views. Those differences can bring dissatisfaction because they shape the way you perceive your partner. The best approach is to continuously align your political views as a couple to avoid problems.
